Agree...a first rounder for a good but aging player is way too much.

Also, here's the deal Allen got. Wow.

Former Chiefs player, Jared Allen, has agreed to terms with the Minnesota Vikings on a contract that makes him the highest paid defensive player in NFL history, exceeding the deal the Colts gave to Dwight Freeney last year. The 6 year deal is just under $74 million, including $31,000,069 guaranteed. Kansas

Take it for what it's worth, but this guy argues going after the stud WR doesn't usually help. in fact, it can hurt.

He noted the two obvious exceptions: TO and Moss.

Some highlights:

The 31 teams that lost these receivers dropped from an average of 7.3 wins to an average of 6.6 wins. But the 31 teams that picked up these receivers also dropped slightly, from an average of 7.9 wins to an average of 7.8 wins.

...

One reason these players haven't been more important to their new teams is that 1,000-yard receivers who change teams have usually tended to be very good No. 2 receivers like Boldin, rather than superstars like Johnson. Only 15 of these 31 receivers led both their old team and their new team in receiving yards.

...

On the other hand, Owens and Moss have each switched teams twice, and neither one made as much of a difference the other time. The Cowboys signed Owens and went from 9-7 to … 9-7. Even after trading for Moss, the Raiders' offense was still a joke.

Yo, click it

So that all but guarantees the Birds trade up, and take Devin Thomas.

I liked him a lot more when he was projected in rd 2.
Now they're talking top 15????????

The guy's got 1 yr of service so to speak and apparently needs some refinement.

Love the size/speed combo...but man, if he goes in the top 15 or 12 as some are projecting?

Seems like the last minute push (not last minute as in this wk-i realize he's been on the rise for a spell now) in a weak WR year.

This is where the pre-draft stuff drives me nuts. I will bet right now that Mario Manningham has a better NFL career than Thomas. He had a better college career, and he'll likely go 40-50 picks later. All because of about a 3/4 step difference running in shorts?

And usually GM's dont like being lied to, straight to their faces at the combine, only to receive a letter a month later from the same player saying "I lied to you- I DID smoke weed in college- hence my mysterious 1 game suspension at Michigan".

Hey- 70% have likely done it.
Not sayin he wont have a better career & not sayin its a sure fire reason to drop the guy on your board, of "OFF" completely as supposedly a couple GMs were quoted under anonymity a couple wks ago in a pc. i read.

I like his hands better than Thomas', not the size tho.

I read that too. Mario is undoubtedly a jackass for lying about something that as you said is coomnly accepted that everyone, or almost everyone, has done it at least once. And if he actually thought he was gonna get away with the lie, he's even dumber than I thought. It was pretty common knowledge within the Michigan program--and its fans--as to why he'd been suspended.

That said, Manningham is a guy who's got the hands, the speed and the big-play ability. Any big Michigan win in the last three years features big catches by Manningham-- for the sake of PSU/ND fans I won't go into specifics here.

I just think somebody's gonna get an absolute steal in round 3 with this kid. I'd probably rate him third among the WRs in this draft. He's kind of immature, sure, but all that means is he'll have a lot of company in just about any NFL locker room where he ends up.

Immature and "Good WR" seem to be 1 and the same anymore.

And Thomas is said to be just as immature.

And that may very well be true, regarding Mantooth. With Chris Henry about to be effectively banished, Pac-Man taking a year off, etc. I think the 2nd or 3rd round is about right, though.

If you put yourself in the GM's shoes, you've got a guy who:

- Is undersized.
- Ran poorly.
- Was suspended in college for weed.
- Lied to your face the first time you ever asked him something of any importance.

I mean, you need to draft him in a spot where you can justify the risk. Players of his caliber are 50/50 anyway, so you're lowering the chances he'll help you long term with every black mark against them (and there are quite a few).

I don't know if you guys heard this or not, but one of the funniest things to comes out of the combine is Thomas has one leg which is longer than the other.

Seth that article is fucking retarded. Every WR listed is NOT one that you would seriously consider a game breaker. I mean Peerless Price? Mushin Muhammad? Lavareus Coles? Santana Moss? C'mon. Those guys are definitely not in a league with Moss or Owens.

Furthermore, it isn't as if a team can get ONE stud WR but suck in so many aspects of defense and special teams and suddenly be competitive. The Raiders never had a QB worth having. Moss helped a really crappy offense be a little better. The defense was atrocious. I'm not sure those comments are valid at all.

It's like that HD commercial, 90% of statistics can be made to say anything 50% of the time.

I'm not looking to draw a direct comparison, but how different is his situation than the one that Chad Johnson was in? I know he ran slow and thought he had a drug issue from college.

Jules,
I linked the article, not Seth.

I put it out there for discussion. The writer made similar points as you, regarding the quality of the impact WRs acquired. I think the gauge he had was a 1,200 yard season the season prior to the acquisition. The writer laid it out, but did note the problems with the analysis.

To be perfectly honest, I don't remember the details of Ocho's past.

With that said, you have to look at the big picture. How is he different from Chris Henry?

The point is he may succeed and he may fail, but you're taking huge gambles every time you draft a player and every possible factor in the equation has to be evaluated and added as a plus or a risk.

One leg is shorter than the other? How does that work?

Mario had a much better college career than Devin Thomas--but then again, David Carr had a better college career than your boy Tom Brady.

I like Mario's height, speed and hands and I have been a little surprised to see him fall off in the minds of draft experts. However, Thomas is bigger than Mario and ran a better 40 time. How that will translate when the games start is anyone's guess.

I don't see how it is a lock that they move up and grab a WR. I'm still thinking that they'll take one in the 3-5 round area, probably someone who returns kicks as well.

19 is too early for Thomas IMO. He did have a decent year last year, but his track record is far from extensive.

I'd rather see them take another RB at 19 than take Thomas in all honesty.

Where will James Hardy get picked? I saw him play about 4 games last year and was impressed.

Actually, thinking about it Mario wouldn't be a bad get for philly. He may not have that ideal size for the offense, but he doesn't shy away from crossing routes and the like, and the big-play ability has shown itself time and again.

I would think by the 3rd-4th round--which is sounding more and more likely where MM goes-- even Reid could overlook the admitted character risks for that kind of potential.

I was/am a fan of taking Thomas at 19, but I am beginning to wonder if that was a mistake. I'd like the Birds to take that kid from Appalachian State for a return man. Jackson? I imagine he would be available in the 3rd as long as someone doesn't think he's Ted Ginn.

I think Mantooth will end up going in the second round (no later than early third).

I mean, Maurice Clarrett was drafted in the 3rd round. Someone will take a chance on him in 2 (my opinion), but no later than 3.

He would be a possibility, but I don't think he has a chance to ever be a starting, #1 WR. Even in the third round there are guys with a chance (no matter how small).

I think they love Eddie Royal, FWIW.

"I was/am a fan of taking Thomas at 19"

-Homer, or should I say Dr Homer.

I could see them liking Eddie Royal as well.

I think that MM is like a better version of Todd Pinkston--a threat on those deep routes, not a big frame--but if used in the right system could be dangerous.

The main reason I don't want the Eagles to get him is because I could't handle having 2 Michigan WRs on the roster.

If they trade Lito and get another pick in round 2, maybe the Eagles would take a shot a MM, who knows...
