CHAD’S GOOD DEAL GONE BAD

If you thought Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson was upset before, what about now?

Now that Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald has signed a four-year, $40 million contract.

While Fitzgerald breaks the bank with $10 million per year for four years, Johnson is boxed in by a contract that went from good to bad in a hurry.

“Chad’s got to be crying,” one NFL insider told me.

Why? Because he’s between a rock and a hard place … for the next four years.

The $35.5 million extension Johnson signed in April 2006, which included a fat $10.75 million signing bonus, looked great at the time. But it doesn’t look so good anymore compared to Fitzgerald’s monster deal.

Johnson is due to earn $3 million in 2008, $4.5 million in 2009, $5 million in 2010 and $6 million in 2011. That’s $18.5 million.

In that same span, Fitzgerald will make $40 million — $22.5 million more than Chad.

Chad cannot be happy. But he has only two people to blame: himself and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Instead of waiting for Chad to reach free agency in 2009, they leaped on the Bengals’ six-year extension in 2006.

The following are Rosenhaus’ quotes I wrote in the Dayton Daily News back on April 20, 2006. I laugh every time I read them:

“It’s a great day for Chad and the Bengals for him to be able to finish his career as a Bengal. It was a very smooth process. We’ve been working on it for a year. It’s a great victory for everybody involved.

“I can’t really think of any deal like this. I give a lot of credit to the Bengals for reworking a contract that had four years left, and you’ve got to take your hat off to Chad. He’s a great player, on and off the field, to merit this type of unique situation. It shows you what a phenomenal player he is.”

The Bengals are shrewd negotiators. They dangled the carrot on the string, and Rosenhaus-Johnson swallowed it hook, line and sinker.

TENNESSEE REUNION CONTINUES

Though it's unclear whether the development will help to remove the stick from defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth's personal sausage factory, the Tennessee Titans have spent a little more of their salary-cap bulge.

Specifically, the Titans have brought back receiver Justin McCareins.

McCareins is the second former Titan to return since the start of the 2008 league year. Last week, defensive end Jevon Kearse came back to Nashville after a four-year detour to Philly.

The Titans selected McCareins in the 2001 draft, and traded him to the Jets in 2004. He generally was a disappointment there, and was released earlier in the year.

McCareins' deal reportedly is for one year, with a base salary of $730,000 and incentives that could push it to $1 million.

I just wonder how awesome this offense would've been had they ponied up the pick to get McCareins in here with TO in '04.

So Shaun Alexander will likely be cut prior to training camp...

I would imagine he doesn't do much for anyone here, but do you think there's any chance the Eagles would sign him?

Strikes against him:

He's over 30.
He's past his prime and appears to have little left in the tank.
He's not the bruising powerback they'd need.

Pluses:

They hate bruising powerbacks, and he isn't one of them.
He played for the hallowed Walrus.
They need someone to backup and spell Westbrook in case Bill Sampy doesn't work out in his new position.

That's all I got.

I know there seems to be no way in Hell they'd make this signing, but it seems as though the WR route appears to be just about closed. Will they really enter this season by giving the proverbial finger to McNabb and ignoring his request for some help on offense, or will they try to make a move like this and pass it off as doing something for him?

Since the story on Fitzgerald broke, there has been no report from him of any kind on the Blast Magazine site OR Gcobb's site.

For the sake of some Bleeds talk;

He is the 1 F.A. who would fit the bill of:
Highly thought of coming out of college, and his poorer numbers are justifiable looking at whom he has in front of him on the depth chart. How many balls will come his way with Boldin and Fitz?

He has good size. 6'2, 215

He's young. He'll be 27 this yr.

He started only 8 games last yr and went over 530 yds. Give him 16, he's likely goin to come in close to the 900 yds mark Id think, conservatively.

He's got the size McNabb would appreciate in the red zone, where neither Curtis nor Brown currently do (Browns about 2' shorter and 20 lbs lighter, and sadly after last yr Id have to admit he plays smaller than Curtis at times).

Between he and Hackett, gimme Johnson.

You're likely thinking "Young? He's 26 now!"
but young in terms of 'tread off the tires"---- 27 still gives you plenty of good years (assuming you're actually good) and when you consider that he hardly plays (most games he has ever started was 11 in a yr) he's not as beat up as a normal starter his age.

His numbers in his 8 starts weren't very impressive, though.

29 catches
318 yards
2 TDs

F_D, for the sake of argument- how good were Greg Lewis's numbers last yr?

Or Avant?

Baskett? (who I swear is the forgotten man on that roster) HE SHOULD RUN A MANDATORY FADE PATTERN IN CORNER OF ENDZONE ON EVERY PLAY THEY RUN INSIDE THE 10 YRD LINE!!!!

Not good. But you can say that B.Johnson legitimately wasnt goin to get in the game ahead of Fitz and Boldin (or Antwan Oldin per Howard last nite as I flipped to WIP and the immediately AWAY from it after that statement).

Yeah, that's what I'm saying.

He did get buried on t he depth chart, but he got almost 1/2 a season worth of full game starts last year and didn't impress.

He's probably better than anyone on the team not named Brown or Curtis, but I'm not sure he really helps. I'm not even sure he's better than Baskett...the player they just refuse to use.

Plus he has 39 starts over 5 years. That's a lot of time to show if you have anything.

And it's not really fair to compare him to Lewis or Avant. If he was going to make Lewis or Avant money, cool. But he'll probably get #2 money somewhere
