The Dallas Cowboys plan to release veteran receiver Terry Glenn, bringing to an end a lengthy squabble regarding whether Glenn would agree to take a drastically reduced payment in the event that his bad knee would have resulted in his placement on injured reserve.
Owner Jerry Jones claims that the move isn’t the result of Glenn’s refusal to accept a lower salary if he can’t play.
“That turned out not to be an issue,” Jones said. ”At the end of the day it had more to do with where we are right now . . . all that might have impacted how we give our young players a chance in how we evaluate that position.”
Glenn was due to earn a base salary of $1.74 million. Jones wanted Glenn to take only $500,000 if the knee were to implode.
Immediate speculation likely will center on Glenn signing with the Dolphins, given that Miami V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells drafted Glenn to the Patriots in 1996, and brought Glenn to the Cowboys in 1993.
Glenn spent five seasons with the Cowboys, but played only one game in 2007 before his knee prevented him from any further action.

What the hell...
Pack offers Favre $20M to stay retired
Posted: Thursday July 31, 2008 06:10AM ET
Though NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is waiting at least one more day to reinstate Brett Favre, neither that extra time nor a $20 million offer from the team to stay retired will resolve the Green Bay Packers' impasse with their record-setting quarterback or prevent him from reporting to training camp. Packers President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Murphy met with Favre and Favre's agent, Bus Cook, on Wednesday at Cook's office in Hattiesburg, Miss., but Murphy was unable to convince Favre not to report to training camp. Murphy didn't have much football related to entice Favre to stay home, though a source close to Favre said the team raised the possibility of paying Favre a substantial salary -- about $20 million over 10 years -- to stay retired. "We're going to do whatever Brett wants to do," Cook told the Hattiesburg American after the meeting. "And right now, his intention is to go back to Green Bay and play football."

I think the Packers are afraid of two things, and apparently they're very afraid of them:
1. Farve stays in Green Bay, in which case he's a complete distraction when the team is trying to move ahead with their QB of the future or...
2. Farve goes to the Vikings, which would be akin to McNabb going to Dallas or the Giants. My wife's brother lives in Minneapolis and when we were out there a few years ago, I caught a game at the Metrodome. Great fans (great food and beer too) but they HATE Green Bay.

Has a team ever shown so much loyalty to a QB who has never started a game and has left both games he played in with and injury, though?

This won't happen. Once Favre gets reinstated, GB still owns the rights to his contract. He'd either have to get released or traded, and neither scenario works.
The first is more likely, which is why Favre was offered that "hush money" to go away quietly. As long as he's in the league, the media will scrutinize any mistake that Rodgers makes. not to mention him being on the team creates a distraction that's really unnecessary.
Favre won't do for any other team what Montana did for KC in 94.

regarding the 20 mil to stay retired post, i have to agree with f-d here. wtf?
this is a team that went to the nfc championship game last year on the shoulders of a great year from farv-rah. he's begging to come back. your 'qb of the future' has proved nothing to this point. and this is really is a league where you really can only look forward one year at a time.
perhaps favre's desire to come back is not the nightmare that the packer's have made it out to be. they've even claimed that they want to be a "defense first" team. so why not go with the flow here?

Agreed section - Favre is an asshole and is getting off easy in the press.
But if I'm Ted Thompson, I let the guy play. Think about it - either he does great and GB is a playoff team, or he plays like shit and makes himself look like a complete ass. The only way Thompson loses for sure is if Rodgers runs out there and sucks as hard as most first-year QBs do.

I know there is a big anti-Favre sentiment out there, but I just don't get it.
The guy is just a classic aging superstar who can't hang it up. He waffles every year and he's never sure if he can give it another go until he is.
Let's examine who's being whiny/unreasonable here...
Favre unretired and wants to come back. By all accoutns, he can still play at a very high level and he was a game from the Super Bowl last year.
The team offered to:
- Let him come in as a backup (without the chance to compete to start).
- Will not release him OR take him back to date.
- Offered him $20 million to stay retired.
One guy just changed their mind and said they wanted to play again. The other side is acting like a crazy broad.

They were ready to have Favre back as the starter in March, but he changed his mind back again. At some point you gotta go in a direction, and Favre's wishy-washy-ness has made the FO want to move in a different direction.
I agree that both sides are acting unprofessional - GB needs to trade him (since they've said that Rodgers in going to be the starter, no matter what). I understand why they're going in this direction, but I think Favre burning them has made this somewhat personal (at least for Thompson).
IMO, it doesn't really matter that much, because Favre isn't going to take this team back to the SB.

My only anti-Favre sentiment is due to the coverage he receives. Let him play. He has to agree to a trade, but I don't know if he can veto a trade once he's agreed to accept being traded.
I think that's the rub for the org. It may cramp their ability to get value in return. If he digs his feet in and says, "Green Bay or Minnesota" and forces them to choose between not moving forward with the franchise and sending him to a division rival, I can see them developing an attitude about his demands.
Just let him play in Green Bay. If you're going to pay him $20 million to not play, let him play for less. Aaron Rogers, let's be honest, the kid's not going to play well. He's a Tedford boy and, by that fact, is destined to be a bust.
Get him in camp. Run him through the drills and let him play two more years in GB.
If anyone complains that he's dictating his own terms and the team is kow-towing - they're right. However, he is the face of that franchise and kept it competitive for almost two decades. It's not like he's a four year player or an aging vet who can't play the game anymore.
Get him in camp for Green Bay. Let him play.

This idea that "you have to have direction" is completely blown out of proportion, in my opinion.
The Vikings would kill to grab Favre. Why aren't they concerned about "direction".
I've just never heard of such a ridiculous situation. The coach said, publicly, that if Favre comes back, there will be no QB competition.
In what universe do you purposely play the inferior player for no other reason than "direction". It all comes down to this fascination teams have with maintining a playoff caliber team for 20 straight years. They're completely fascinated with "grooming" someone for the QB spot, when it rarely works out.
I hope they trade Favre and Rodgers goes down week one. Honestly.
That's what they deserve for this nonsense.
That said, I do agree that Favre isn't taking the Pack to the Super Bowl anyway.

Loyalty these days is overrated, unfortunately.
This has gotten way out of hand, for both sides. I'd like to think GB was trying to shut him up with the $20 mil offer, so as to not to ruin his legacy or cause a ruckus, but even then, how do you pay someone not to play? Unless they suck.
And really, my point has always been that they're not going to go to the SB with either QB, so why not see what you have? And maybe I'm looking at the Dallas game too closely, but Rodgers didn't perform poorly in that affair.
I'm tired of reading about Peter King's Locker Room Report from Favre's Bedroom, or the rest of the media reporting as "Breaking News! Favre scratches nose...could this mean an alliance with Tampa Bay?" Trade him, don't trade him, let him go to the Vikes, whatever. Just do something and get it over with.
