Is it that he can't get by on his pure athleticism anymore? In college, the guy was so much better than almost everyone else, it was a cake walk. I'm sure it was the same in High School too. Perhaps he just has never really had to press himself beyond just the minimum and just can't handle it no being easy.
I believe that's part of it, along with not having a bunch of people kissing your ass on a daily basis.

and they thought about extending the regular season to 18 games....ummm probably not.
it sounds like that is going to happen, unfortunately.
this is one time i'd enjoy seeing a player's union take a hard line.

this whole VY is just facinating and i'm so curious to see how it plays out. rereading that article from his mom... unreal. that's mama mcnabb multiplied by 100. how can he ever regain the trust of this teammates, coaching staff and FO? especially when he isn't very good to begin with?
this is just an absolute nightmare for our old friend jeff.

A lot of big names out early.....and they thought about extending the regular season to 18 games....ummm probably not.
I've heard a lot of people make this argument over the past couple days, but I don't really get it.
I'm not sor or against extending the regular season, to be clear.
However, how are injuries in week one an argument against add 2 games to the end of the year?
In Colsten's case, for instance, it would actually help the Saints because he'd be able to play more games for them when he's healthy later in the season.
In Brady's case, he's done for the year whether they played 12 games, 16 games, or 18 games.
I can see the entire battle of attrition when you talk about an 18 game season, but I don't think injuries in week one are an argument against extension.

Not saying it's not the case (you've really got to be mentally tough to play QB at any level), but I'm wondering how the guy won a national title in Texas and he all of a sudden can't cope with the negativity, going so far as to practically hide on the bench and out in public?
The point about his athleticism is a good one, but why would the Titans pick him if he wasn't all there, mentally? Even not being a hard worker has to show up in the combines, right?
It doesn't matter, either way - whether he doesn't have then mental toughness to play the position, or he had a mental breakdown when fans called him on his poor performance, his NFL career is in the tubes. There's almost no way you could come back from this from a PR standpoint (let alone your teammates and coaches).
The sad thing out of all this is that he didn't last as long in the NFL as Reno Mahe.

Texas players were always considered "soft"...kinda the same label USC guys are getting now.
The theory was they lived as Kings on campus, in town, and were beloved celebrities. When they get into the real world, they can't handle negativity.
That was one of the knocks on Chris Simms and on Mike Williams whenthey came out of Texas.

And I got your point, fd. Under those conditions, VY's mental midgetness is better understood.
Still, how could someone miss that?

I don't know...I'm sure it is to some degree.
I'm sure coaching and fan pressure are two elements. There are some fans (like those of Texas) who seem to be truly in love with the team and positive regardless of their performance.
Texas is also unique in the sprawl of the fan base. Texas is a big state and it's nearly Univerity of Texas territory.

If the Titans thought VY was 'too soft', then bringing in Chris Simms isn't exactly upgrading to steel from whipped cream.

“Black or white quarterbacks, we all go through something because that’s the life of a quarterback,” Vince Young said last year. “You’ve got to be able to handle all the pressure. You’ve got to be able to handle the losses. You’ve got to be able to handle the media. If you can’t handle it, you’ve got to get off that position and go play something else.”
Pronounced "EYE-run-ee"
Oh and Simms was signed by the Titans. Yay.

I forgot about those quotes from last year.
Someone should ask Young "how long he's been a pussy QB".

That would be akin to asking him how long he has been a black QB

But isn't it like that at every big school?
As someone who lives in Austin, I can tell you it's much worse here. The main reason is that Austin is the biggest city in the U.S. that doesn't have a professional sports team. Hence, the Longhorns have as much focus in town as a professional sports team would in any other city. They're always being interviewed for the 10 o' clock news, being asked to come to charity events, etc. The players are treated like rock stars wherever they go throughout town.
They also don't deal with much adversity, since they overmatch their opponents on sheer size and talent alone. They don't have to work that hard to win 10-11 games a year, and the town is fine with that. Add to that the fact that Mack Brown isn't exactly a genius coach, or believes in too much hard work, and you see why the athletes are coming out soft.

I do have to ask this - with all these teams with QB probs, why hasn't anyone given Culpepper a ring? I mean, Chris Simms, who's done nothing, got signed by the Titans.
This isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of his play, however - just wondering out loud.

With Smith, you could call him a bust (certainly), but he never had a chance. That's a bad, bad team with bad, bad ownership, and no continuity.
Nolan is a flat-out fraud who has no business as a head coach. He's just made one embarrassing gaffe after another.
If not for Willis and Gore, I'd say that team should just fold up their tent and move to Canada where they could potential compete for mediocrity.

Per Peter King...
I think if Matt Millen had stayed in Detroit, and the Lions continued to nosedive, chances would have been better than 50-50 that Roy Williams would have been dealt to Dallas for a first-round pick before the Oct. 14 trading deadline.
Now? Depends whether Lions interim GM Martin Mayhew and club executive VP Tom Lewand want to try to sign Williams long-term or add a low first-rounder to the mix of whoever ends up running the franchise. The correct decision, unquestionably, would be to add the first-round pick. Even though it might be the 32nd pick in the draft, you're better off getting quality youth than you are to pay sick money to a player who doesn't want to be there.
Glad to hear the Eagles are still in the mix for a WR....
