I see why they are tryin him at FB, and really the terminology is all the same, its the blocking assignments that are different. I dont know how quick he is at learning, but I do see the pickle they're in not only with FB, (Thought Jed was doin fine- but he doesnt have the athleticsm of Hunt) but in finding a place to put Hunt on the roster- he seems to have come on and I dont think his being released is the slam dunk it was during the post draft OTA's.

seth, i think you nailed it, but what's going on with the FB position this camp is a bit ridiculous.

if they like hunt a little bit, then wouldn't it make sense to just let he and buck compete for the last RB spot?

i guess this begs another question - has hunt ever been known as a good blocker?

They say they are looking for special teams players. Hunt made the grade on special teams.

So if Hunt is the better special teams player ahead of the three fullbacks, they woud keep Hunt,
and release the three fullbacks, and have 4 halfbacks and 0 fullbacks.

So now if Hunt can pick up fullback, they won't have to sacrifice anything. They'll have a great special teams player, a fullback, and a 4th halfback.

If...

It's great in theory, but we're talking about someone who hasn't ever been a lead blocker before and he has 2 weeks to do it.

I just don't know why they stubbornly repeat this mistakes.

FD, how dare you question Andy Reid and his perfect system. Aren't we still set up to win multiple Super Bowls?

F-d,don't you realize by now they aren't mistakes? The execution is just a 'hair off'. If everyone would've executed Reid's game plan to perfection each time, we'd have those multiple Super Bowls.

By the way, I've been accused of being a homer by some on these boards over the years. I disagree, but if Merril Reese woke up with my level of homerism one morning, he'd throw himself off a bridge.

That guy makes Spuds look like Lord Vadar.

Needless to say, he's extremely excited about the prospects of having a "weapon" like Hunt at the FB spot.

funny thing is, my football buddy and i discussed just that same thing about 5pm tonite.

if the birds are in a 2 back set, and bwest goes in motion, if jed collins is the lone setback, i think the MLB immediately shifts his attentions elsewhere. but if hunt were to remain the lone back, he has just enought talent and pedigree to cause the LB's to hold their ground til the snap.

but eeb, it seems if it were that simple, every team would use a rb as a fb.

can hunt actually play the position? and is three weeks before the season the time to find out?

my response would be that only about 20% of the teams offensive plays involve the FB.

hey they could be keeping jed collins too.

or is it that its tony hunt, and you're showing ur "PSU Envy" mr. panther. he he "blue"

I don't think I am lying when I say I wanted to try Hunt as fullback as soon as I heard that we had a big back that we hardly ever use. More so when I heard after the Booker signing that he wouldn't make the roster.

Regardless, according to the Eagles site, about Hunt's blocking skills: Mornhinweg said coaches had "small, quick discussion(s)" on occasion and determined that the move was worth a shot. I think his blocking is something he's been upgrading for a-while anyway, so that it's more like going from 40 to 60mpgh than it is form zero to 60.

Also according to the site, the fullback could see an increased role should a natural tailback like Hunt win the job. The way things are now, when the fullback is in the redzone, I immediately think that the pass to the fullback is coming, so it might be nice to have some new wrinkles there.

I applaud the positivism, but here’s a bucket of cold water for you.

Tony Hunt has never played a singled down of FB in his life. Last year, one of the many he things he sucked balls at was blocking. He has 2-3 weeks to learn how to become a lead blocker.

The idea of having Hunt running quick hitters for first downs, ending up all alone in the flat with a chance for a bigger gain, and potential pluses are all great. However, his 10 carries this season and 10-20 receptions he might get at that position don’t excite me when compared to the times he gets McNabb killed in pass pro or the times he whiffs on a block that leads to Westbrook getting hammered behind the line (which will happen).

Think about this…Wil Witherspoon is a LB they’ll face week one (just as an example). He’s been shedding blocks for probably about 20 years. Tony Hunt will have been making them for about 20 days. Who do you think wins that battle 9 times out of 10?

I would love it if they could get something out of this busted pick. I absolutely like the idea of adding a “weapon” for the position. However, as Flesh said, if it was as easy as just converting a bigger HB to FB, every team would do it.

This isn’t some kind of plus for Tony Hunt. This is the Eagles liking his special teams ability, not having a FB on the roster they feel comfortable with (this will be their 4th or 5th starting FB on the depth chart since camp opened), and rolling the dice.

I’ll be following it and rooting for him, but I’m not holding my breath.

My thinking, which I can't prove, is that this is the 4th or 5th fullback because the ones they felt okay with at fullback didn't play well on special teams. Now that they found a bruiser who runs on special teams, they want to see if he can be the hammer that can block at FullBack. There giving him a chance to see if he can block. I think if the job is as impossible as some people think, he won't make it. (By the way, doesn't he have to block on special teams too?)
