Why is he still on the team?

No bites?

I am just honestly amazed that he is still an Eagle as of right now

(And as far as using the web to meet guys, 700level.com ranks about 5,938,897 in that category)

BTW, I'm amazed, too. I felt a little queasy as the picks got near to 19 that they would soil themselves and take any old offer for him.

I'm just glad I root for a team that's so good, they can skip the 1st round for two years and still compete for the title.

Not being able to move Lito is either the fuck-up of the century or maybe just cold reality.

If they end up packaging him for a WR today, they made a wise move. If they end up dealing him for a 1st rounder in 2009 today, they made a wise move. If they didn't have a second round offer, they were probably smart to keep him.

If they had any of those scenarios already on the table and blew the deals, they fucking suck. He has to move...he has to be dealt or he will make himself a problem.

Im glad they didnt just give Sheppard away, if they werent happy with the offers.

But with "ten offers, 6 that are substantial" quote from banner now looks about ridiculous.

Lil' weasley liar!

(kidding- everyone settle down, i doubt it ends up this way, with Sheppard still an Eagle come camp).

I said from the Get-go that Lito would not necessarily bring a bunch of suitors and high picks. I've basically given up trying to figure out how these guys get valued, or why anyone would even bother trading for 4th round or later picks.

I think it was consensus that he should have netted them a 2nd.

Don't know why that didnt happen.

In the F.O. of this team, 4 6th rounders in better than 1 first rounder--that simple.

With Mendenhall on the board at 19, how could they pass him up? UGH.

Well, I'm starting to get stocked about the 4 6th rounders that they have coming up--maybe they can dump Lito to some team for their next 10 6th rounders.

JAGS ENTER LITO SHUFFLE
Posted by Mike Florio on April 28, 2008, 4:56 p.m.
Even though the draft is over, the Jacksonville Jaguars are continuing to try to swing deals that will make their team better in 2008.

The next addition could be Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard, who is squarely on the trading block but who was not traded over the weekend.

Per the Philadelphia Daily News, the Jags and Eags are discussing a deal that would send a “package” of 2009 draft picks to Philly for Sheppard.

Such a move would add firepower to a 2009 draft board that already includes two first-round picks. And it would give the Eagles ammo in the event that they make a run later in the offseason at one of the established veteran receivers they are widely believed to be coveting.

For the Jaguars, it would give them another weapon in the ongoing quest to wrest the AFC South title from the Indianapolis Colts, and at the same time establish even more separation from the Titans, whose relative inactivity during the 2008 offseason might plunge them into a battle with the improving Texans for the basement of what might be the best division in the league.

Jaguars.com "Spadaro" Q and A says Lito deal a sure thing by the end of the week. Also that it will include their 2009 1st rounder. I just hope it DOESNT include MAtt Jones. Get the first rounder, than go balls to the walls after Boldin or ROY. OVerpay for them. Trade two 1's. It is not "over paying", it is simply meeting the market price for a Vet #1. It is clear they are not going to give em away.
Malcolm from Jacksonville
There are rumors about the Jaguars going after Lito Sheppard. Please tell me this is realistic, because wow!

Vic: It’s real, baby. The Jaguars have offered the Eagles next year’s first-round pick and the sports coat Jack Del Rio wore on Monday night last season. The Eagles want it dry-cleaned. That appears to be the major stumbling block in the trade.
Joshua from Orange Park, FL
Lito Sheppard; looks like it's gonna work out before the end of the week. How will he fit in? I'd expect him and Mathis at the corners, and with Florence, Nelson and Williams we'd have on paper a very solid secondary heading into next year, right?

Vic: OK, seriously, let’s ask ourselves the question the Jaguars have to ask themselves and answer before they can make a deal for Sheppard: What are you willing to give in exchange? That’s the issue here. Sheppard’s a good player. I haven’t heard or read a knock on him, but what would you be willing to give in the way of future draft picks? It’s not just “Oh, wow! Let’s do this.” Draft picks are pieces of gold and they must be collected and treasured. They represent your team’s future and the more of them you have, the better it is. The Jaguars just traded away five picks this weekend for two players. Do you really want to keep doing that?

OR MAYBE NOT.....

Update: Jags not talking about Lito
by JasonB on Apr 30, 2008 9:36 AM EDT in News

Florida Times-Union writer Michael Wright has the scoop.

I finally got in touch with the agent, Lamar Smith, who said he couldn't confirm or deny the report. No need. I spoke with Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, who said Tuesday that the club has never even discussed the possibility of bringing in Sheppard, a Jacksonville native. In fact, Del Rio said he spoke with Philadelphia coach Andy Reid over the weekend during the NFL draft and "Lito's name wasn't mentioned."

Del Rio was very candid.

Del Rio, meanwhile, viewed the report as nothing more than an agent posturing for a new deal for his client.

"We have not even discussed him in our building," Del Rio said.

Not a huge surprise. After a weekend when the Eagles declared that they got no serious offers for Lito and that there was little interest... Lito's agent has to try to show that his client has some interest from teams around the league and therefore some leverage in getting a new deal.

I have to wonder whether Lito might take this as a humbling experience? It certainly is looking like his value around the league is not quite what he thought it was. Maybe he really isn't underpaid? Taking off my Eagles fan hat and putting on my objective commentator hat... I honestly think Lito's best option right now is to show up and play for the Eagles, try to stay healthy and visit this again next year. No one around this league doubts Lito's talent or playmaking ability, the only worry(and it's a big one) is his health. No one is going to give a player who has missed as many games as Lito the kind of money Asante Samuel and Marcus Trufant got. If he stayed healthy this year and played at the level we all know he can... his value would shoot up. Teams would be willing to part with high draft picks for him and fork over the big money.

Honestly, could Lito have picked a worse time to want a new contract? You could argue that his value is at it's lowest point in his career after these last few injury filled years.

I have to wonder what's really been the stumbling block to a Lito trade - the Eagles' demands, or Shepherd's? If the only thing stopping a trade is a new contract, you'd think that would be hammered out, but if the Birds were asking for a 1st or a high second (seemingly with the Rams), why would anyone give in? And if the writer notes Lito's playmaking ability, you'd think Lito would be happy with a contract that at least pays him more than what he's getting now (but not quite Samuel cash).

One season (unless he's playing like Night Train) isn't going to bring Lito's value up to the point where he'll get Samuel money. As much as I want to see him come back, is he going to just accept it, knowing the guy he's playing across from is making a lot more than he is?

The Eagles aren't absolved in this in any way - they basically advertised getting rid of Lito by bringing in Samuel, and of course no team is going to give you top value for a commodity that you're already talking about getting rid of.

I was joking about the returner....

I dont know what poeple wanted the eagles to do re:Asante/Lito deal. If the eagles traded lito before signing asante, they would loose leverage with samuals agent and pay even more than they did. They would show their hand.

They played this right. Get Asante done. Than shop lito. They lost leverage with other teams, but still got thier guy in A.S.

I am not sure how else they could have played this, while still assuring themselves of getting A.S

Said it before. I'd rather restructure his contract with a modest pay raise and have a killer secondary for 3-4 years. That way, all those picks can be pieces of gold to drafting a serious WR or trade up to get a real blue chip playmaking safety (late Taylor-like), killer LB (Vilma/Williams or is it Willis?), or a strong, big enough fastball DE who won't wear down after the first quarter.
