Kind of easy when you are starting from zero. Unless he was starting from less than zero.

Well, I said at least 60 catches and he's up to 53 right now so unless he disappears the next few weeks he may even make a run at 70 catches.

Talking about Maclin's potential production made me remember this thread. Here's how DeSean finished up:
Receptions-62
Receiving Yards-912
Receiving average-14.7
TDs-2
He hit the receptions right where I thought he would. The TDs are surprising low, but then again, he did drop several sure TDs as well.
I'll be happy if Maclin reaches half of DeSean's rookie numbers in receptions and yards.

Stellar.
Getting thoroughly clowned (in his own thread) in the Concourse, now he scuttles away to the Bleeds to try and gain some of his ego back with this oh so subtle attempt at self-promotion...
Congrats, you hit the pool and you guessed closest-
Tell him what he won, Ed!

Has it occurred to anyone that Maclin, having been drafted in the 1st round, will a) likely make more money than DeSean and b) likely produce less on the field?
This will inevitably end in DJ calling for a new contract, the FO ignoring him and then eventually trading him for a total of 18 6th- and 7th-round draft picks in years 2010-2028.
Thoughts?

If Desean takes another step forward this year, I definitely think he's going to get a quick extension. The CBA might delay it a little bit, though.
They won't know what the new cap will be and if the cap goes away even for a year, players like Desean won't be eligible for FA until their 6th season or something like that. That's the only potential monkey wrench.

...which will likely be followed by him complaining that he's underpaid 2-3 years later.

For what it's worth, I asked Spuds to compare his first impressions of Maclin to Desean, Pinkston, Fredex, and Brown. He said he compared favorably to Desean last year.
He also said that Desean was completely unstoppable in this mini-camp....couldn't be covered and appears ready to be the true #1 WR in the offense.

Not quite. Players on rookie contracts don't start bitching because they're hitting their stride right when free agency arrives, so they know there's a big payday ahead. Players who sign extensions know that their shot at free agency and big paydays are effectively over, so they bitch and moan.

Poster above just came up with a pretty good example of how DeSean could start bitching this or next year.

It's really not bizarre to think a cocky young player would see a guy not playing as much or well as him and want a new contract. It happens all the time.

I get that he's cocky, and I see that he's on a fast trajectory. However, I don't see players bitching about outplaying their rookie contracts because they either get extended or they wait for free agency's big payday. It's only a couple years after they get that long extension that the whining begins.
Most rookie contracts are 3-4 years. Most extensions are for much longer than that, and that's wherein the problem lies. If every player could hit free agency every 3-4 years, you wouldn't see this kind of whining.
I honestly don't recall a player bitching about his rookie contract. Of course, I'm sure that there was one, and your statistical research will find him within the next 17 seconds. GO!

Talon, it's theoretically possible a guy liek Jackson could get anxious and bitch about an extension during his rookie deal. I think it's most typical in guys who are selected in the latter half of round one or lower and have some early success. it seems to happen before the final year of their deal, normally.
I can't think or a bunch off the top of my head, but Willis McGahee and Larry Johnson both held out and requested new deals or extensions in the last few years.
There are guys on the other side of the fence, too. Demarcus Ware is still on his rookie deal and maign $1 million this year. Here's a 3 time pro bowler with almost 60 sacks, but he's probably one of the 10 lowest paid guys on the team and he's not bitching publicly. I think Desean is the kind of guy who wouldn't sit quietly, though.
I don't think he'd bitch this year, and I don't think he'd bitch much next year, but if he's a pro bowler and improving on that rooie season when he enters the final year of his deal making $700K or something like that, I can't imagine he'll be thrilled and he seems to be the kind of guy who wouldn't want that to go unnoticed.

I shoudl add that I think we're in an unusual situation as Eagles fans because we're a bit sheltered from "rooie contract frustration" in a sense.
If they don't re-sign a guy at least a yea ror two before their rookie deal is up, it's because they suck or have no interest in keeping him at the price he wants so everyone comes to accept that player is just moving on and the player doesn't bitch too much since he'll be getting his money from someone else soon.

I just don't think it makes sense to do an extension with him until they're at least midway through next season because unless the salary cap changes significantly, these deals jump drastically each year. While the Eagles would get a bargain for doing it early, they would just subject themselves to the same kind of T.O./Lito/Sheldon bullshit sooner rather than later.

Yeah, I wasn't saying lock him up today. I was just saying I think they'll try and lock him up before any problems arise, and that it wouldn't be weird for him to start bitching about a new contract one he sees Maclin making more and playing less.
