Precisely. If he was in street clothes and not riding an exercise bike looking like he's trying to warm up, this is a non-issue.
Why?

MCL "tear"? It is usually called a grade 3 sprain. Anyway, to address the medical part first, the MCL, ACL, PCL and LCL (lateral collateral ligament) are all stabilizers of the knee. You could stand if one of them or even two are "torn" (term is used really for PCL and ACL). The problem is that the knee is unstable. So, the nonsense of comments about him standing on the sideline are bizarre but come from people who have a presupposition of how that injury should play out.
Of course, PLAYING on a knee like that really introduces significant risk of meniscal or cartilage injury. Those can lead to early arthritis and limit playing days.
I think people misunderstood my comments. It was essentially what FD was saying which is that Cutler has cultivated a bitch image with teammates and media. He has never seemed to ever "quit" on a team. He played 9 games in Denver with diabetes and was undiagnosed. He suffered headaches and blurred vision. He was sacked an obscene number of times early this season. The moral of that tale is that it would be out of his character (bitch or otherwise) to "quit". The guy has an indifferent attitude about making mistakes that rubs people the wrong way. However, that doesn't equal quitting.
The reason I commented this could define his career is that in this league the "man's man" perception predominates the culture. So, there WILL be plenty who question him UNTIL he wins.
Either way, I could care less. The Eagles are out of the hunt - again.

Maybe I'm from a different school of thought. If a guy stays out there with his teammates, gives it another shot, and keeps trying to loosen it up to the point where he thinks he can play on it, I don't look at it as a negative.
The only thing I thought bordered on looking bad was the fact that he didn't appear to be involved with the other QBs after he left.

KB, people are used to seeing players who are truly injured either in street clothes, on crutches, wrapped in ice or a brace, or not on the sideline at all.
It was bizarre seeing a player who was too hurt to go back in the game on the sideline, riding a bike or walking around.
I'm not saying he was faking it, it was just unusual. The Bears sideline is probably more to blame than Cutler for letting an injured guy just cruise around like that.

That's fine, this whole discussion is centered around people using that and going nuts about what a bitch he is. There's a definite missing step in there

SZR, what you're really saying is Cutler's almost god-like toughness actually made him look bad...by walking around on an injury that would have put your average QB in a wheel chair.
I've seen enough "tough" players like Blaine Bishop gut it out right past the point where they cost their team a game, so I'm all in favor of injured players removing themselves if they can't be effective and I don't really question an injury or heart unless there's a history.

Speaking of which - that whole game is up on Youtube, and it was strangely therapeutic.
Just wanted to point that out

f-d but we're talking about initial perception and reaction. I don't recall him being tended to by the medical staff, on the table, or anything like that, all things which would lead one to believe he was too hurt to play.

zak, you (and some others on your side) are obviously some of the smarter guys on the site, but you definitely have blinders on in situations like this.
Without knowing anything, people made declarative statements. People never stop and think 800 things that happen with a team happened and they're just not privy to it, and are sure of something against the whole field of things that are possibilities. All b/c of perception, which has nothing to do with his previous rep

SZR, that reasoning is stupid. Just because you didn't see him get hurt or tended to doesn't mean anything. The guy plays QB and had a popped knee. End of story. That's why they carry three QBs. All this drama is silly.
And on a unrelated note, while I always criticized McNabb for his shoddy accuracy, I did respect the hell outta him for playing on a broken leg.
It always comes back to McNabb.

And now you're the one leaping to conclusions. I never buried Cutler or called him a pussy. Just pointing out that the situation was extremely unusual based on what we've seen happen when thousands of other players have been injured.

LOL. Yeah, your FRANCHISE QB has a popped knee and you just let him sit there. Right, nothing abnormal about that at all.

I thought McNabb played on his broken ankle so he didn't have to listen to the critics scrutinize him for not running.

Should they have started life-saving surgery right there on the sideline then?
I guess if you WANTED to make your QB look like a pussy and a primadonna, you could make him watch from the locker room separate from the team, or change into street clothes while the NFC Championship game was still going on...
The guy says he can't run around on the knee- so I guess you want the doctors there by his side the whole second half in case of cardiac arrest?
LOL yourself

FB- name one time when a franchise QB or any star player seriously hurt himself and didn't at least have a brace or a wrap on.
Why would he be warming up on the bike for a ligament tear? That hurts more than helps.
It was just beyond strange, is all.
