Mangini seemed to indicate the Jets could file a formal complaint to the league regarding the behavior of Seattle's fans.

"I wouldn't want that to happen at our stadium," he said.

New Yorkers throwing snow? Yeah, THAT would never happen.

Jets fans would have been pelting their own players if they watched them lose to the lowly Seahawks.

My Christmas wish is for a huge snowstorm on Sunday and a blowout shutout loss to Dallas (featuring a 90-10 pass-run ratio, of course) that ends with the fans pelting Reid repeatedly with snowballs.

The fans would be villified (what else is new?), but it would be a public relations nightmare.

PFT says the Pats are going to franchise Cassel.

$12 mil seems to be the number, which means they want something for him via trade, or they're afraid Brady won't be back by the beginning of next year.

Hey Dr. Jules, what's the likeliness of the latter scenario?

Considering how early his injury occurred (and despite the repoted setbacks), I'd be very surprised if Brady wasn't ready to suit up next year. I think it's a combo thing with Cassell because they have the cap room, he'll be the most sought after FA this off-season, and they can control where he lands to some degree. I don't know if he'll be successful in his next home, but I'm sure they'd like to trade him out of the division if at all possible.

Do you think their trade leverage is somewhat hindered by the fact that teams will know they'll want to trade him (assuming Brady is healthy) and not keep him on the bench at that high pricetag?

It most likely will be to some degree, but if 2 teams are interested, it won't matter. If only 1 team is ready to step up with a serious offer, it'll probably hurt them more.

They'd probably settle for a package of picks including a second rounder, I would think. I'm guessing the Jets, Bucs, Vikes, 49ers, Rams, Chiefs...maybe Bears, Bills, or Browns. Christ, there are a lot of teams that could potentially use a QB.

i'm gonna disagree with f-d's assessment of brady's readiness to start next year. even best case scenario with an ACL is 18 mos for full recovery, right? add on that the setbacks we know about about and his age, i'm guessing he isn't ready by next year. the fact that brady isn't a running qb doesn't really matter, either. it's obviously hard to know because the pats keep such tight wraps on things, but it doesn't sound like brady has even been able to start rehabbing the knee yet because of the infection and subsequent scar tissue build up (as has been speculated/reported).

just my two cents.

on a related note, what do people think of cassel's chances at being a top-10 type qb in the league? i have no idea having not watched any games, but i'd be leery, ala feely.

First, he won't have the same type of lineup as he does now, unless he goes to Dallas. That lineup could make Spergeon Wynn look good.

Beyond that, people knew at the time that Feeley's play was partially due to the team stepping up and him not screwing up too badly. He was OK, but not someone who you'd say would lead you to a SB. A white Rodney Peete.

I doubt he plays as well as he did in NE, but considering the lack of quality at the position, he might be better than average. I mean, who do you choose - Cassel or Gus Frerotte?

And considering how Brady reportedly screwed up in getting a non-team-sanctioned doc, I have to wonder if he'll be able to play in 09, if at all.

New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre didn’t attempt to ingratiate himself with his teammates in the locker room this season, according to a Newsday report quoting an anonymous Jets player who described Favre as an aloof and distant figure.

“There was a lot of resentment in the room about him,” the unnamed player said, according to Arthur Staple of Newsday. “He never socialized with us, never went to dinner with anyone.”

The player said that Favre, 39, didn’t hang out with his teammates in the locker room, preferring to isolate himself in an office specially assigned to him located close to the equipment room.

Earlier in the week, Jets safety Kerry Rhodes weighed in on Favre: ”If he’s dedicated and he wants to come back and do this, and do it the right way . . . and be here when we’re here in training camp and the minicamps and working out with us . . . then I’m fine with it. But don’t come back if it’s going to be halfhearted or he doesn’t want to put the time in with us.”

Also, running back Thomas Jones, the team’s Most Valuable Player, blasted Favre in a radio interview, suggesting that Favre should have been benched due to his various untimely interceptions.

Bottom line: It doesn’t exactly take a genius to see that a pretty clear picture is emerging that Favre will have some fence-mending to do with the Jets’ rank-and-file players if he chooses to return for next season.

And the mere fact that such an effort will be required could prompt him to retire (again), or to perhaps try to finagle his way into yet another franchise for 2009.

Meh - they'll smooth this stuff out and Favre will come back next year. Won't he?

Well, there's "full recovery" and "healthy enough to play". McNabb was back on the field in 9 months. He probably didn't feel like himself until this year, but he was back in the starting lineup. Brady might struggle next year as he comes back from the injury, but what are they going to do? Pay Cassell $12 million to ride the bench?

They are going to have to deal him before the draft in order to get the highest value (since a lot of the teams looking for a QB qill draft one if they don't think they can get Cassell), so my guess is they trade him before or during the draft and pick up a veteran as Brady insurance.

What's the track record for similar guys who have been in Cassel's shoes? I don't think there's been a lot of success on that front, although injuries have hurt some of these guys.

A.J. Feely
Matt Schaub
Derek Anderson

Maybe you throw post-Redskins Trent Green in that mix, too.

of course not, but franchising cassel is a move it seems like the pats would have done regardless of where brady was in his recovery. it gives them time to wait on brady and get a better read on his progress. if they think brady will be ready, they know they can trade cassel, if not, they keep him for a year. the only way the pats would get screwed is if brady is ready and they can't find a taker for cassell, which is unlikely.

i guess i am confused or perhaps misread your point that franchising cassell in some way implies the pats think brady will be ready. maybe you weren't making that connection.

If it came out that way, it wasn't my intent. I think they are assuming he'll be ready and will trade Cassell before they even have any real idea (other than general optimism).

Any surprise that Peyton Manning wins the MVP?

I guess I'm surprised because his thing as become old hat by now, and I wasn't even thinking about him as a possible recipient. Of course, it makes sense, given Manning's role on his team, but I thought someone like Drew Brees might get some love. It was kind of shocking to see Brees get zero votes with Manning winning in a landslide while Brees has over 1,000 more yards passing (only QB with over 5,000 yards passing this year), 7 more TDs (34- tied for first), and an average of 56 more yards per game (only QB to average more than 300 at 316.8)

i like pennington ahead of brees, too.
