is matt cassell the luckiest man in the NFL? if the league lasts 1000 years, there will always be a GM too stupid and short-sighted to resist the "feely effect".

Agreed....in fairness to Cassel, he got dumped into a crappy situation. That team sucks.

Ah....like Christmas coming every year, so does the Dallas implosion. Another loss is around the corner...1:56 left with a 10 point lead. The Chargers could fail, but I think they don't.

I'll wait for the explanation/excuses. Jerry's face is going to roll up like those pull down shades in cartoons.

Bringing this up here instead of the pre-playoff thread because it's more of an off season issue, if Romo and Dallas collapses again (vs NO, at DC who always plays them tough, and vs Philly could be the toughest schedule for the playoff potentials out there), does Dallas start thinking about drafting a QB of the future? I mean, a lot has gone into Dallas having all these weapons, and Romo has had to shoulder the blame year after year. With a potentially deep QB class next year, it has me thinking they may.

Not to defend Romo, but they can't possibly blame it all on him. He didn't fail to convert from the one four times.

Romo actually wasn't bad. He did what he needed to do, for the most part.

You could point out other things, like the secondary getting abused by Rivers, the 'same play 4 times' at the goal line when maybe they should've kicked a FG, among other things.

Isn't Romo 0-12 in December? Sure, you can't blame it all on him, but if they want to win superbowls, Romo isn't the answer. Sure, he can play football but he's not a leader and he's not a clutch performer. Without anyone to push him, he'll probably never get any better either.

Bass, I mean pushed him for playing time. TO pushed him emotionally, sure, but if Romo feels he may get Farve'd out of Dallas, he may try to step it up a bit.

Just saying, with Dallas' activity every draft season, they may try to move up to get one of the better QB's to groom under Romo and see if Romo takes that as a hint and starts winning December games.

And sure, it's not all his fault they don't win, but he's also not performing at a high enough clip in order to get it done. He could alway audible out of the same 4 running plays for the TD, but he didn't. Payton/Brady would have.

McNabb would have.....not.

I get what you're saying, but they've been VERY careful not to put anyone behind him that might push him. Brad Johnson was a disaster of Spergeon Wynn proportions. And for a while they really had NO depth back there. It was crazy thinking that Jerry Jones wanted os much for his pet project to succeed that he basically paved the way for him with almost no adversity.

I think it's more than him seeing a potential starter behind him to get his butt in gear. He's still star-struck by his position and it will take someone actually beating him for him to learn, but we know that won't happen because no one's put him in a pressure situation.

And after a while, the 'can't win in December' tag keeps gnawing at you until maybe you start believing it.

I don't know if he's a "bust" so much as worn out. His body couldn't handle the brand of football he wanted to play and he looks shot at 26. He's like a mini Eddie George who wasn't nearly as durable.

Shame on you FD.

He couldnt in his BEST days, SNIFF the kinda talent/production of EG.

MB III was always "Just wait until _____ ".

Wait til he gets more touches than Jones.

Wait til he heals (you've touched on that/those issues recurring)

Wait til Jones is allowed to walk

Truth is I thought he was extremely 1 dimensional, and not very good at that 1 dimension when he was healthy.

Meh- Im labeling dude "El Busto".

Seth, the solid numbers arguement is the opposite of what people said about how Farve could turn around Minnesota. Folks said he had horrible INT numbers, his passing rating wasn't super high and his completion percentage was pedestrian. The guy didn't look pretty statistically but he knew how to win.

Romo is the opposite. He looks great on the books. Good passing percentage, lots of yards, not a ton of turnovers to scores, but his teams lose. As the leader of a team, that tells you something about him.

I'm not saying that Romo is a horrible QB, just that if Dallas wants to ever win a Superbowl again, they need to get a winner at QB. Romo is not a winner.

I'd have to dispute this notion in every aspect. There's no such thing as a, 'winner,' except for someone who happens to be on the winning team. Romo may be erratic, prone to good and bad performances (not unlike a certain Philadelphia QB), but there's a difference between erratic performance and some sort of intangible propensity to win. Tony Romo is what he is, a good QB who throws the ball well, except when he just decides to forget his fundamentals. Examining why he may or may not have checked those fundamentals at the door on a given Sunday is fruitless.

AZ, what most of those stats don't show is what their passing rating is when the score is +-5 points, how they perform when the game is close, etc. That is when a winner puts up numbers, not when they are behind by 20 points and get 2 TD's to get close before going 3 and out to end the game.

It's not a statistical area where you can call a guy clutch or a goat, but Romo's so far been a goat. How can a guy have great numbers and lose that often, year after year? There's a point where it's not just everyone else's fault.

Frankly, I hope Dallas leaves Romo in there for another 10-15 years. Eventually though, they'll make a move.

I'm not saying that it isn't his fault. What I'm saying is that I'm guessing that Romo is neither clutch nor un-clutch, winner, nor loser. Rather, I'm guessing that he is inconsistent. He simply demonstrates poor mechanics on some days.
This is in contrast to Peyton Manning, who, according to many here on this msg board, was considered un-clutch until he took the Colts to the Super Bowl. However, Manning was the picture of consistency (ordinarily). Indy's losses were usually based upon the team's performance rather than Manning's.

It's true, it could be Phillips is the one who calls the bad plays late in the year. Maybe the coaches don't prepare well enough later in the season.

The thing is, when you get to where Dallas is, you can add in more weapons or you can replace the engine. Dallas has been adding in weapons every year. Supposedly they had the best ones they've had before, but they're still losing. If Dallas fails to make the playoffs, I don't think adding in another LB/DB/RB/WR/OL/DL in the bottom half of the draft will help Dallas get any better. Deciding on getting a QB of the future though could put Romo in one of those situations where he has to prove he's worth trusting. He has no competition. I think that's really where Dallas' problems lie.

We pretty much agree, just for different reasons.

Right now, in order for the Cowboys to be at their best, they must do two things:

1) Make sure that the entire team is playing well and executing.
2) Hope that the QB isn't having a bad (i.e. inconsistent) day.

Sort of sounds like the life of an Eagles fan, in that getting both of those things can happen, but not all the time. That's why the Eagles can crush a pretty good team one week and lose or tie against the worst team in football the next week.
