Don't want to split hairs but Tim Tebow should get some credit for taking media attention away from the Packers. Tim Tebow shouldn't receive any credit for the success of the Packers.

Yeah, I'm not saying he's actually making them play better, but just saying he's inadvertently taking some pressure off them since the media is so preoccupied.

Cardinals could jettison Kolb over the next 2 years and not take a huge cap hit, despite the contract he signed.
How sad would that be? And wouldn't this put yet another dent in the image that Reid develops good QBs?

Let us pray this does not happen for two reasons:
1) It will be used as further "evidence" that the system matters more than the players in it.
2) Once Vince Young leaves town, guess which team will be in need of a backup quarterback?

The Eagles would use it as another piece of evidence to the "brilliance" of the front office, fleecing the Cards for a 2nd round pick and a Pro Bowl corner for someone who they ended up taking back.
Actually, that's not a bad haul, but it misses the point of making a QB

So I understand this correctly, … you trade away something of little value for a draft pick and a player resulting in another dent in your image.
Nice spin.

How did Kolb become of little value when he was drafted as the future? And if he does come back and performs well in the system, doesn't that make him of more than little value? (Not to mention the situation being really funny)
My point was the reason for Kolb's draft and subsequent success (or lack of), not his value afterwards.
In all likeliness though, doubtful the Cards let him go in 2012, considering injuries and the shorter offseason.

Kolb’s value to the Eagle’s diminished upon Vick’s arrival and field performance.

I agree. My fear is that since Reid will be coaching this team for the next 27 championshipless years, Kolb will once again be anointed as the starter.

I thought these results from your link were even more intersting:
- 41 percent of African-Americans list Michael Vick as their favorite quarterback; no one else got more than 13 percent of the vote. Only 2 percent of whites listed Vick as their favorite.
- Vick was voted the NFL's least popular quarterback, with 26 percent of the vote, beating out Ben Roethlisberger's 15 percent.
- Tim Tebow, as expected, edged out Eli Manning (12 percent) and his brother Peyton (10 percent) for the title of America's most popular quarterback. Tom Brady, Drew Brees and MVP favorite Aaron Rodgers finished next, with 6 percent of the vote.

Klob gets passed on the depth chart again. I'd feel sorry for him if he wasn't such a well compensated figment of Reid's imagination.

I'll give props where it's due, Dino - David Akers sets the league's scoring record for a kicker, and he's been money this year, proving the FO wrong about him.
I really am happy for him.

Chris Mortensen is saying Manning has been cleared to resume his NFL career.
To what capacity "healthy" entails, who knows. Doc, you wanna chime in on this?

Well, it is hard to say definitively.
The facts:
patients who undergo back surgery often have recurrence of their symptoms which prompted them to undergo it in the first place or develop new symptoms related to scarring. One analysis states that their is no difference between surgery and physical therapy.
Manning has "congenital spinal stenosis". That means the spinal canal which houses the spinal cord is narrow. Consequently, any narrowing caused by degenerative changes may have earlier symptoms. These patients oddly don't have a much higher risk for back problems than the normal population. However, it manifests sooner when it does.
Nerves. Schefter and the entire ESPN crew needs to be punched in the face. They don't regenerate. Never have. Never will. The pressure exerted by a compromised spine will cause pain and compromise function. Alleviation of that pressure by whatever means (healed "slipped disc" or surgery) will allow restoration of normal function. If the nerve is damaged, it is game over.
Muscles. If there has been a denervation injury because of nerve damage, the muscle becomes atrophic and fatty replaced. It is very difficult to restore strength (not necessarily function) in these muscles. If the atrophy was related to disuse, then, he should be able to restore strength with training and time.
A 35 year old that's had 3 spinal surgeries and missed an entire year because of it does not bode well prognostically.
Impression? Manning's best days are over. Even if he plays, he will have the benefit of muscle memory but he will not play to his original level. Don't be fooled if he does very well early or for a game or four.

Doc, I hear someone tell me the nerve can regenerate b/c it's not part of the central nervous system. Is this true?

I should qualify what I am saying. IF the nerve is dead, then it cannot regenerate. Same with brain tissue (neurons) and cardiac muscle. Cartilage, ligaments and tendons can't either, but that is mainly because it doesn't have a direct blood supply. The latter can scar and function adequately, but are never truly fully restored.
Tissues that can be restored or replenished are skeletal muscle, mucosal surfaces, skin (depending on the thickness of damage), etc.
IF the issue is inflammation related to compression from his neck, then, yes, it can "regenerate". I believe that to be a misnomer. It is more that the nerves get chronic irritation by pressure. That can manifest as tingly sensations, numbness, pain, difficulty moving certain muscles, etc. Once it is alleviated, it can (depending on the lenght of involvement) return to normal. It is more that the inflammation and misfiring of the nerve can be restored to normal.
If, the nerves are encased in scar tissue (3 surgeries could do this), then it is hard to ever have "normal" function. He may develop a new "normal" and have function, but he'll likely be symptomatic indefinitely.

Impression? Manning's best days are over.
Conflicting reports coming out if he can ever play again at an elite level but doctors cleared him to play.
Does that mean he can throw a football like he could before the injury. More than likely not.
He thinks he'll play again but so do a lot guys when their careers are all but over.
