Garcia back...and "fiery" as ever

Bass mentioned this in the "NFL" thread, but I thought it deserved it's own.

According to multiple reports (including Sal Pal and DNL) Garthia is back.

I think that once it was clear Feeley wasn't going to come back, it was the obvious choice and while I'm sure he's only in Philly until McNabb comes back, things could still get interesting.

Not only the McNabb/Garcia dynamic with the fans, but now Kolb will have a shorter leash than even I expected.

I'm glad his rat ass is back- it will just motivate McBrokenRib to get his ass back on the field

I talk shit on Garcia, and I would NOT want him in any other situation except DESPERATION TIME, but I am not unhappy with this

Welcome back Chumley- let's see your "wife" and that ass again

thank you, f-d, for bringing some semblance of sanity back to the level, if only for a moment.

this has got to be the only site dedicated to a particular sports team where one would feel odd about starting a thread for the resigning of QB who had previously led said team to the playoffs and has a chance to be a real part of the storyline of this season moving forward.

ridiculous.

I think we need to make an effort to get more individual threads going in this forum. The General NFL thread is fine for "Jags bench Tra Thomas" or something like that, but we need to start getting big stuff in its own thread for the benefit of all the other guys who stop in periodically after work and things like that.

No, flesh - what's ridiculous is that this all could have been avoided had they just stood still. They really didn't need to release Feeley, except for financial reasons. Sure, you're on tap for his salary for the rest of the year - but sometimes you pay for insurance.

If Garcia sniffs the field and does anything positive, it only further muddies the waters for a position that really didn't need more controversy.

agreed in part, bass. going into the season with kolb and vick as your two backups is ridiculous. you obviously need at least one backup that you can count on to run the offense when you have an over 30, injury-prone starter.

however, i think they kind of lucked out, as i'm happy with garcia over feeley (by a small margin). it may "muddy the waters" regarding the backups, but not with mcnabb, who is the guy this year barring injuries.

kolb will have a chance to prove he's not horrible, but ultimately, i think garcia will be the number 2 guy after a poor performance from kolb this week.

and then they do whatever they are going to do with vick.

I agree that Garthia will be the guy (and thinking maybe McNabb is out until TB), but my main point is that it seems like a lot of energy put towards a position where you're more or less screwed if it's not 5 back there.

Almost feel like I have to amend a statement I made earlier about Garcia joining the Vikings. I remember watching the last game with Garcia at the helm and he looked worn-out and done - not the main reason the Bucs lost that game (defense was much older and done...er), but he didn't help matters. And sure, they pushed him aside to get younger (Leftwich....ha!), but Oakland didn't think he was better than JaMarcus Russell? Really?

Not saying I disagree with the move - like you said, they lucked out in getting him, and he should at worst do a Rodney Peete.

but sometimes you pay for insurance.

'Never pay for insurance' is right ahead of 'Never pass less than 70% if McNabb is in the game" and right behind "Never communicate directly with players" in the gold standard's 10 commandments.

that's not really fair. even the raiders aren't going to cut the number one pick in the draft just two years out in place of a 40 year old backup.

that said, garcia may well be toast. we'll see. i really liked watching him lead this team a few years ago, and if mcnabb is out, i'll be excited to see him out there.

i couldn't disagree with this statement more. the team went 5-1 with garcia back there. they've had some success with feeley and koy. to just say "fuck it, we're screwed if mcnabb goes down, so why worry about it" is ridiculous.

for most teams, if your starting QB is out for the season, you probably are in big trouble. but if it's for just part of the season, there is no reason a team can't succeed with a back up.

Raiders could have cut Gradkowski or Frye though, it wasn't Russell or Garcia

I read Garcia asked to be released and that it was a "shock" to Cable.

That's a key distinction in this guessing at whether Garcia is "shot".

right, of course not, kb, and that's a much stronger case against garcia's effectiveness.

i was just taking issue with bass' reasoning on that particular statement.

Raiders coach Tom Cable said Jeff Garcia asked for his release.
Interesting. It was assumed that the Raiders decided to cut Garcia because they were comfortable with JaMarcus Russell and Garcia didn't show anything in the preseason. Cable says that's not the case. "It was a shock to us all," Cable said. "We were blown away." Sounds like Garcia simply didn't want to be a backup.

from Adam Shefter, it seems

Is Garcia only going to be on the roster for one week? Once Vick comes back, what's the point of carrying 4 quarterbacks? We all know they can't cut St. Kevin because doing so would be akin to admitting the colossal mistake they made by making him their first draft pick in a year when they had plenty of real holes to fill.

The longer Garcia stays on this roster, the bigger this mess becomes. Not only do you have a fanbase (whose collective intelligence seems to decline by the minute) foaming at the mouth and yammering for the fightin' fruit to start, but these other reports seem to indicate that he's rather adamant (and will eventually be vocal) about starting.

It's been a really long time since I've posted. It is nice to be back.

I honestly don't think you can expect McNabb to return until after the bye. Even if he does he will be nowhere near 100%. With only one healthy on the roster, the Birds had to sign someone, so it might as well be Garcia.

The real interesting thing is whether its Garcia or Kolb to start against NO if Donovan doesn't. Reid kind of hints it would be Kolb, but I don't necessarily believe much of what he says. I would go with Garcia.

Oh by the way....if Vick ever starts a game this year....then we can start to panic.

Did not know about Garcia asking to be cut. But I have to wonder who was going to seriously have him as a starter right before the start of the season.

for most teams, if your starting QB is out for the season, you probably are in big trouble. but if it's for just part of the season, there is no reason a team can't succeed with a back up.

That's part of my point.

I was just saying that they put more energy into the position than they needed to. At this point, Feeley or Garcia could be successful if they had the right gameplan, but putting in either one meant either Kolb is hurt, ineffective, or tossed off the Platt bridge. Had they stayed put, they would've been OK. Not great, but OK for at least a couple of weeks. They were just being cheap in letting Feeley go and trying to take their chances with a QB that has an injury history and another QB who hasn't played in 2 years who wouldn't be available for 2 more weeks. Keep AJ on, cut him when Vick returns, AJ has his paycheck and everyone's happy.

But there's no way they're winning the NFC East with anyone other than McNabb.

They wanted to keep 7 receivers on the roster, so they gambled on the QB. They probably figured that the gamble was for just the first 2 games till Vick came back. Of course we know they lost that gamble.
