My wife and I have been to Shorty's for games before. Good DJ. Great time. I'll introduce myself next time. Thanks for the invite.

And I disagree with f-dallas because while the situation has always ultimately been McNabb's fault for not keeping his mouth shut, the media have been a very accomplice to the crime, bemoaning the things he says while continuing to pester until he says something stupid. Controversy sells papers/generates clicks/garners ratings, and they knew McNabb was a goldmine waiting to happen. Ask McNabb the same question enough times in enough different ways and he'll eventually crack and say something stupid. Moreover, if you give coverage to any idiot in a prominent position who criticizes McNabb, that's a bonanza that you can milk for years and continually ask McNabb to respond to it.
Yeah, the media is usually driving the bus, but I was saying I think its more about the player than the media. I think McNabb would have ultimately been the same way in NYC, Dallas, or Tampa. I think the victim mentality is built into his DNA to some extent.

Yes, the DJ is a damn genius. He is unparalleled in his craft. He deserves a huge raise, or at least at least a week or two free from the owner's repeated requests to play Black Eyed Peas or Third Eye Blind.

they need to buy out that awesomely disgusting dive bar next door and knock the wall down. shorty's is a great bar and the DJ is sublime, but i'm too old to stand on my feet for 4 hours elbowing people to get a beer or to move in any direction.
i actually go to shorty's on non-sundays every couple of months.

The owner's made attempts to acquire places either next door or behind the bar, but the landlords are dicks, and Dave's Hooker & Crackhead Hangout isn't going anywhere. I swear, watching the assorted characters and criminals that populate 9th Ave is a show far more entertaining than anything the Eagles will ever put on the field.
If you get there early, before game time, you can get a seat, but yes, it's getting ridiculously crowded for games. It's been like that ever since the Phils first made the World Series. Now the reputation has spread and there are lots of people who aren't Eagles fans who just wanna go watch the game surrounded by a bunch of insane fans.
Of course, if the Eagles lose a couple of games, a good chunk of those people will jump off the bandwagon. After the Eagles were 5-4 last year, the place was a ghost town, only to be packed again at the end of the year.

Holy shit, yes. I walk to work whenever I can just to see the crazy stuff that goes down on 9th ave at 7am.
Shorty's is a great place, and it's popularity is not surprising. I dig it, but I'm also not a fan of being elbowed in the mouth every time there's a play. I would stop by on a non-Eagles Game timeslot, too.

Last time I was at Shorty's the bartender wasn't hot. Not even "10 more drinks and she'll start looking hot" hot.
It was the height of disappointment.

Zak, this was a few years ago, before the bar was extending for almost the full length of the place, right?
If so, I know who you were talking about, and I could not agree more. Not only was she ugly as Hell, but she was also incredibly annoying, and she would invite these godawful 19 year-old musical theater majors (a mix of gay dudes and the fat girls who love them) in the bar during football games. I have no idea why she was ever hired, but it was probably because that was a time when business was bad and no hot chick would want to work there.
Let's just say that the entire bar staff has been significantly upgraded since that time. It ain't Hooters, but some of these girls would qualify.

Talon, it was this past March or April.
Don't remember what she looked like as we were drinking heavily beforehand, but that should have helped her case.
Just recall she was very "9th avenue" looking. Kinda old, kinda poor, and just overall rough look about her.
The way I see it, you gotta have a hot bartender in Manhattan. There's no two ways about it.

i believe that was a saturday afteroon, so they probably didn't have their A-team on the floor. still, it was disappointing. i remember a time when the girls there were extremely flirtatious, but that was on game-days.
and i'm glad dave's is not going anywhere. that's become the defacto first-bar-of-the-night for a me and a friend on those increasingly rare occasions when we know we're just gonna get ripped without conscious or remorse.

Well, for the sake of my waistline, I try not to go in there between the NFC/AFC Championship and the start of hockey playoffs, so I have no idea who that could have been. I'm guessing she was a fill-in or something because aside from one who's 28 and not bad looking at all, I don't think there's a single bartender there past the age of 26.

It's hard to believe it's been this long before THIS GUY weighs in.
It's also shocking that he hasn't grasped the fact that the people protesting the Vick signing aren't the same ones cheering him on right now.

Nice one. It wouldn't surprise me if ESPN actually did have some special server room someplace where they had extra special protections on some key go to footage though.

"You always had to be careful what you said about him or around him. He took everything personally. He was uncoachable. His mechanics were awful. But you couldn't say, 'Donovan, put your elbow up,' or 'Donovan, straighten out your toe.' He wouldn't respond to it. He'd go into a funk." -
NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger on Donovan McNabb

This guy also said the Eagles had one of the best run-blocking lines in football right before the season started.
Still, how do you have bad mechanics and throw for over 30,000 yards? How is someone uncoachable when they were shoehorned into a system and still threw for that many?
Is McNabb sensitive and needs a thicker skin? Yeah, no question. But some of that stuff is just wrong.

Baldinger was hired as a commentator in 1997. McNabb was drafted in 1999. They never played together. As far as I'm concerned, Baldinger "knows" as much about the innerworkings of the Andy Reid-era Philadelphia Eagles as GCobb, which is not a fucking thing. And based on Baldinger's steady stream of demotions as a commentator, the networks seem to agree with that sentiment.
Yknow, TO is actually right imo. I never thought I'd say that. He speaks from experience as well.
T.O. is a diva wide receiver. All diva wide receivers are retarded, although T.O.'s inability to accept his closeted homosexuality takes his level of retardation to a new level.
I like Drew Brees. He's a great player, and he's done wonderful charity work for the city of New Orleans. I'm really impressed by the way he took the team and the entire city on his back to a Super Bowl Championship, becoming a pillar of the community in the process.
But my positive feelings toward Brees are irrelevant when the Saints play the Eagles. I want my team to win, and I do not want Brees to play well. If my sitting in the stands while yelling at and booing Brees somehow throws him off his game and helps the Eagles (although I have no idea why the word "boo" affects a professional athlete but apparently these multi-millionaire tough guys are very sensitive), then I'm going to do it. It's nothing personal against Brees, and it's not fickle behavior. I just want my team to win, and when Brees comes into Philly, he is the enemy.
T.O.'s situation is a bit more unique. He was loved by the entire fanbase before becoming a greedy pig who put himself above the entire team and then tried to rip it apart. He is probably the most reviled athlete in Philadelphia and deservedly so. I fucking loathe him and the only way I'd ever develop even a shred of respect for him is if he finally came out of the closet and had the balls to admit who he is.
