If I could be so naive/dumb to ask this question but I never quite understood it.

Why exactly was Michael Irvin hated so much?

I know he killed the Skins time and time again, but I didn't hate him.

And when he showed up to federal court facing coke charges/hookers with a fur coat, I actually kinda chuckled at the balls he had.

Neither of those clowns have played in five or so years. They are irrelevant now.

I think I'm going to reverse my stance on how McNabb will be treated when he's introduced. A good number of the people will applaud, and some may even cheer. A smaller number will boo, and since boos are louder than applause, the whole thing will sound like a mixed bag and won't make for great TV.

However, when he walks on the field for his first snap, he will be booed mercilessly. It will be LOUD. THIS is the clip that every market's local news will broadcast, along with some commentary about booing Santa Claus.

That's a lock right there.

This guy has a pretty rational take on what will happen and manages to take Reid to task as well:
Yo, click it

Agree. You know that the networks love to harp on the fans there. I'm not totally sure it isn't well deserved but still, there are few guarantees in life.

Espn will suck off the yankees, harp on your fans and have a corny ass show where people argue with each other....

This guy also said the Eagles had one of the best run-blocking lines in football right before the season started.

I can see this from the perspective that no defense expects them to run the ball so when the OLine moves forward to push them, they get confused and don't know how to react. This causes a delay which the Eagles offensive line uses to actually look pretty good on run plays.

Why exactly was Michael Irvin hated so much?

Because he was a butthead that was never called whenever he pushed off on a defender.

His former coach, Andy Reid, believes the same thing:

"They remember the good times," Reid [said in a TV interview]. They might give him the business during the game or something, but he'll get a great reception. [...]

"I think the organization does these different polls around the community, and this guy is loved by 99 percent of the population here. It's that one percent that's that loud voice."

Before we get to the statements, a quick word about the second paragraph of Reid's quote: It cracks me up that Reid leads off that sentence by mentioning a poll, thus leading to the expectation that he's about to quote some legitimate data about Eagles fans and their feelings toward McNabb. And then, out of nowhere, he quotes a clearly made-up number. It's like when I talked to a friend in Los Angeles yesterday and he said "I was watching the news and the weatherman said it got up to six billion degrees outside." Maybe the difference between 99, 90, 75 and 50 percents are negligible to Reid. That lack of number recognition would certainly explain his timeout usage.

I chuckled, also b/c we know the Eagles are full of crap with their "selective" polls. Not that Reid sounds like anything more than a politician now, anyway.

And Balldingle is full of crap with most of his analysis - he's definitely pro-Eagles at times, and statements like these just prove that.

Why exactly was Michael Irvin hated so much?

Because he could do WAY more cocaine than I'd ever see in my life. And he was a Cowboy.

I sat down at the bar I work at for a couple of hours today waiting to talk to the owner.

ESPN news was on one of the big screens.

In the two hours I was there I counted 9 times that douchebag shawn and the dirty 30 booing on draft day was shown.

Irvin was hated for more than a few reasons.

1. He was a Cowboy. Not necessarily a shoe-in for hate, as there are more than a few Cowboys that have garnered a healthy level of respect from our fanbase over the years. Jay Novacek, Moose, and Bill Bates come to mind. These were lunchpail guys, and our fans respect those types

2. He was good and was a Cowboy. Sometimes plays into point #1, so it's not a shoe-in for hate. Don't think that the level of hate was ever really there for Aikman. Yeah, we'd love to see him pasted into the turf, but I don't remember many saying that they outright hated the guy. I do think that Emmit was hated however, simply because he was as good as he was for that team.

3. He was arrogant, was good, and was a Cowboy. OK, now we're talking. When you hit the big three, you're in a special place around here. Another that fits that bill would be Deion Sanders. I don't think that many would have shed a tear if he would have been killed in a senseless act of violence a few years back...or now for that matter. As for Irvin, I think that much of the hate has ebbed a bit over the years, but it does bubble to the surface every now & then.

I do think that the predominant thing that keeps the hate flowing from Eagle fans is that many of those who we tend to hate are not only those that exhibit all three of these traits, but also are incredibly over-exposed in the media (read: ESPN). I think that as I look forward to the easy journalism that has flowed from that organization over this past week, and the stream of what's to come, perhaps we may have been somewhat remiss at directing the hate where it truly belongs; Bristol CT.... and the front office of our own organization (but that is the topic for another day).

3. He was arrogant, was good, and was a Cowboy.

That is Aikman personified.

I might be in the minority, but my hatred always went:

1. Aikman
2. Emmit (because he was vastly overrated)
3. Irvin

Another reason Iggles fans hated Irvin so much is because he was really one of the first diva wideouts. Being a diva is different than being arrogant. We normally refer to wideouts as divas because they routinely overestimate their impact on the game. Wideouts touch the ball maybe 6-7 times in a game? And yet, they talk more smack than anyone, and Irvin was one of the first to do so.
As a diva wideout for the most hated team on your schedule, in an era where diva wideouts weren't really that common, Irvin demanded your hatred. Irvin was like Freddie Mitchell, only good -- he talked the smack and backed it up with those 6-7 touches. And you really just wanted to see him fall on his face (see the aforementioned FredEx).

I disliked Emmitt really only because he was a Cowboy. Overrated? Sure. But he was a class act, never talked shit and did whatever it took to keep himself playing.

Aikman was too stiff for the group, it was Irvin that was the talker, and that's why folks hated him. He was the peacock of the group, and drew the attention to himself because of it. If anything, Aikman and Emmitt got less shit from fans because Irvin talked so much shit.

Emmitt Smith was never even the best RB in his conference and they talked about the guy as if Jim Brown couldn't have held his jock. He routinely took off his helmet to showboat even if it was just a first down. He ran through holes large enough that Andy could have gained a significant number of yards.

Two of my all tike favorite moments:

James Willis intercepts Aikman stealing a sure Cowboys win. Jerry Jones on the sideline with a grimace (pre face lift).

McNabb jukes D. Sanders when he was on the Skins. They still show thay clip for intoductions to NFL Films.

Freddie Mitchell chimes in, saying how McNabb, when he was playing, didn't go through his progressions to get the ball to him - it was always 1 then safety valve (Westbrook).

Gee, maybe he thought Freddie was into polygamy with all the lack of separation he got from CBs and assumed he wasn't open anyway.

Emmit (because he was vastly overrated)

I don't think I'll ever understand this one. I've heard this argument before, and it usually goes something like:

"Emmitt's overrated!!"

"Yeah? Why do you say that??"

"He isn't (wasn't) as good as Barry Sanders!"

Oh. OK.

But I would call that a "Warm Welcome".

Philly fans do have a heart. I for one, thought that was very classy and great to see.

ENY,

He had an all-world line to run behind. THAT is why you hear that statement so often. Barry Sanders ran behind one of the WORST lines in football making his accomplishments all that more impressive.

That line could have made a good RB great. So, it is hard to know with any certainty whether Emmitt would have been as good behind an average line. I doubt he'd have even sniffed the total yards record.

Point being, falling second to Barry Sanders is not exactly something to be ashamed of.

Emmitt holds a ton of records. Yeah, his o-line was awesome for part of his career. So what? Is Jerry Rice overrated because he had Steve Young and Montana throwing to him?
