You could even say Michael Irvin has financed a couple drug cartels by himself with the amount of coke he's done.
It's a sport with not a lot of good people, and some of the ones that LOOK good are so incredibly sordid that you wonder how they were able to hide it for so long (Marvin Harrison, anyone?)

I get the feeling that Seth must have made Verizon a small fortune last night with a NEAG-ian volume of texts!
I said this on the day they signed Vick: He committed and was convicted of a crime. He was sentenced to time in prison, and he served his time. He was released and said the right things, talking about how he could use his experience to prevent other people from making the same mistake.
What more can you possibly want from the guy? A pound of flesh?
You either believe that the American justice system affords a criminal the opportunity to serve their sentence and then redeem their life or you believe that all criminals should be put to death or serve the rest of their life behind bars. "Dog lovers" are not looking at this situation with even the slightest bit of objectivity, just as I'm sure a victim of child molestation would not appreciate a sex offender moving into their neighborhood. But if you can separate your personal bias from the issue at hand, I think you see that he's mostly done the right things since his release, and moreover, his case shined a light on the disgusting practice of dogfighting, which has likely prevented many from going down that road.
Since he has yet to be hit with any actual charges or served any time (aside from a cakewalk suspension for a few weeks), can you say that Roethlisberger has improved his life to this degree? It's hard to tell.
Now did I want the Eagles to sign Vick at the time? Not really because I figured they'd never make proper use of him, which they really didn't last year, and he'd just languish on the bench. Plus, he never showed me anything to believe he could be a legitimate passing quarterback. He just looked like a standout in the recent history of running quarterbacks who can't pass, from Tony Rice to Vince Young, and he was pretty dumb, too. The pass to Maclin last year was his only quality throw all season, so there was no way to predict his success this year unless you're the kind of guy who likes to stake out unpopular, strident positions purely for the sake of pissing off others.
One thing is becoming clear these days: athletes tend to take a long time to mature. A lot of these guys come from shitty backgrounds and are lionized and surrounded by posses of leeches who do them no good from an early age. It takes a while, and sometimes something tragic, for them to finally grow up. A guy like Iverson is just now starting to show the slightest signs of adulthood. The same is true with Kobe. LeBron may never get there. T.O. is nearly 37 and he surely won't reach adulthood until he comes out of the closet.
Being convicted of a serious crime has likely been the event that saved Vick's life, and I'd imagine that not a day goes by when he doesn't think about it. Even if the guy wins 5 Super Bowls, people will always bring up dogfighting. It will deservedly be his cross to bear for the remainder of his life.

lulz, I might have been stirring the pot back then with some of the things I said, but I truly believed he could at least get back to his Atlanta levels of athletic ability.
I am not going to sit here and say I thought he'd do what he did last night, but I did say Reid could be like a mad scientist if they got things clicking with all of that speed.

I'm honestly curious-- did you see him becoming a prolific passer? And if so, what did you see that led you to believe that?
I just can't seem to find anything that would lead anyone (Reid included) to believe this guy could suddenly become an accurate passer making smart, quick decisions with the football, let alone put on an absurd display of proficiency like he did last night.
I guess it either makes Reid & Co. the greatest quarterback coaches of their generation, or it makes Jim Mora's staff one of the all-time worst.

i said it earlier, but it's becoming pretty hard to deny that reid is simply an outstanding QB coach.

I really thought Reid could improve him, but not to this level.
I knew the situation he was coming to in Philly was night and day from the coddling and jock sniffing that accompanied him during his time in Atlanta.
I figured he'd get his wheels back and improve slightly as a passer, but to watch him go through 3 reads and then take off, or hit the 3rd or 4th guy with a pass, is really a testament to his willingness to improve and Reid's development skills.
His arm and legs had me enamored(like everyone else) and I thought even a marginal improvement in actual QB skills(accuracy/progressions,etc) would be enough to put him clearly above Kolb.

And let's also not diminish the pairing of possibly the league's strongest arm with the league's best deep threat.
Still, Vick missed many a bomb in Atlanta...he's been shockingly accurate on his deep balls this year, IMO.

Also, I know it was only two plays and one was in the blowout loss to Dallas in the playoffs, but the roll out for a long pass against the Giants late in the season and the TD pass to Maclin in the playoff game at Dallas really stood out to me as the first indications of what he was doing and what this offense could be capable of.
Sorry for that extremely long run on sentence.

thought the MNF crew did an excellent job illustrating the maturity in vick's read progressions and mechanics.

The pass he threw to Maclin was a freakin' thing of beauty. If it were right another foot, he'd have caught the ball out of bounds. And he didn't even look like he needed to load up to throw it.

seriously...honest question, because i haven't seen every play this year - is there a pass that vick is having trouble with? didn't seem like there was a throw he wasn't completely comfortable with last night, whether a deep route, slant, or seam up the middle.

He has like a 150 QB rating when he goes deep to Jackson this season.

There have been a couple throws where the LB was sitting back in a zone that could have picked, so I'd say the intermediate crossing route is still a bit of an issue for him, depending on the type of coverage he's facing.

During that incredible run, I thought no.
Deep pass? Check.
Curl? Check.
Out? Check.
Shovel? Check.
On the run? Check.
Don't remember if they tried any slants, but the ball got there so quick and so accurately that the D was effectively helpless. Even the pass to Avant had a small window, and it zipped there so fast that there was nothing that could be done.

i guess that would be the one. the intermediate pass up the middle on avant's TD was a great read and throw, but avant was stationary. also the ball the celek dropped/got clocked up the middle was a nice pass but not perfect, which is seems is the only way celek can bring in a ball this year.

Also, let's give a lot of credit to the OLine. Didn't hear much from them, which is how you can tell they're doing their jobs.

i have trouble even calling that a bomb, as it seemed more like a low-flying laser that just happened to go the distance of a typical "bomb". just sick.
