I'm trying to figure out the angle here. If he was really ousted against his will, it would be an odd choice. After all, why ax Banner when he's the guy who handpicked both Reid and Roseman. Basically, if you're unhappy with the President and the President's primary function was choosing the GM/Coach, why fire the President but keep the GM and Coach?

The real question, of course, is whether they'll retire his brown sweater. Ring of honor?

I'm almost inclined to believe the story...they came to some kind of understanding some time ago that Banner wanted to be part of an ownership group. Lurie declined to sell him part of the Eagles, but asked him to setup a structure of people to replace him before he goes. That would explain the rapid/unusual ascension of Roseman from lawyer to head scout to GM negotiating all contracts and cap management in about 5 years.

It doesn't look like he was forced out, but also doesn't look like Reid's getting anything new out of this.

Yo, click it.

It looks like Roseman and Smolenski get more power out of it, maybe it was a Roseman power play?

Sheridan did an interview with Rosenhaus and Drew commented on how much Roseman was in on the negotiations for Desean and Lesean. Even then you could tell Banner wasn't being part of contract negotiations anymore.

There's an intimation that Reid believes Desean's contract issues kept them from being in the playoffs (which is true, since him missing the Cardinals game had a profound impact on the game....and let's ignore DRC/Asante getting toasted by Fitz, btw), and logically you could infer that the focus on free agents but the lack of focus on team guys (which there are years of documented evidence) helped to push this over the top.

IMO, I guess there's a feeling that Roseman and crew will be able to duplicate all the cap stuff that Banner did, plus Roseman seems more unlikely to say stuff like "we're like the Steelers", but who knows?

I kinda feel like if Reid doesn't win a title this year that he'll probably get bumped up in some form. So I'm not totally sure how to feel about this.

I really doubt it, unless Reid was using Roseman against his mentor, which I think is highly unlikely.

I just think this is an accumulation of stuff, and I'm sure Reid brought in a 3-ring binder of all the moves that Banner made that pissed him off (there's probably a chapter devoted to Brian Dawkins)

Honestly I think if Reid ended up getting moved to President and wasn't in charge of playcalling/clock management, the team would be better off. I think he's a pretty solid at player evaluation so that could end up being a net-ahead move.

I think the report outta the LA Times or wherever in March was right.
I think Reid wanted to wrest more power back if he was indeed going into a make or break season.

I think we all notices over the years how Banner had kinda become the face of the franchise and we questioned then how much power, how many of the decisions being made were Andys vs Banners.

I think the D-Jax thing went a long way to burrying Banner.

I think it is his style to be the hard line, we have you over a barrell type where, right or wrong, i think Ried is more a players guy- for certain players.

I think Andy won the power back when he was assumed to take the reigns in SD if he were to be fired here last year.
I think Lurie blinked, didn't wanna lose andy to Chargers so he agreed.

I think thats the difference between last yrs offseason moves which in hindsight wreaked of desperation and banner's quote of "all in".

Look at this yr. By all accounts/reviews- another 'good' offseason but completely different. Extending guys who have busted it for the team. That goes a long way in the lockerroom Id think- more than bringing in hired expensive hands on 1 yr deals while guys you drafted and who've excelled for you need deals or should likely get extensions.

These moves have Andy's fingerprints all over them. with Howie's help.

I belive he & Howie have formed a good working relationship as well.

I never got that sense from Banner & Ried- i think there was always an underlying current of 2 guys who both feel they should have the final say.

Howie's still green enuff to not feel the need to compete w/ Ried for final say or enter an ego driven pissin contest.

The fact that Joe was a PR Nightmare for the team, forging a huge divide w/ the 'lunch pail larry' fanbase who call into the shows and miss child support payments so they can pay the final balance on their season ticket package every June didnt help him either.

Its clear that the Eagles (Lurie) are worried about how they are perceived. They are hyper sensitive to any criticism real or perceived.
Anytime Banner would go on WIP and talk over everyones heads and stop shoprt, citing that it was too difficult to explain to them, or compare the Eagles to the Steelers favorably- the Birds stock in the public eye dropped.

It doesnt help that during this span, where the Birds began floundering and not bein auto-entries into the postseason The Fightin Phils across the street became the darling of the city.

This is as much about Reid winning out (just my opinion) as it is cleaning up the PR w./ The birds. They've already made Andy more accessible to less strained media interractions- something Jeff said he wanted (Andy to be less terse, gruff etc with Media). Howie Roseman - as much of an unknown as he may be still- doesn't come off like his mentor at all. He too seems more available, and was always more forthcoming & humble than Banner.

Net ahead, as someone already stated.

*While Reid may have seemingly more power now, as I stated to Talon via text, isn't he kinda outta excuses now too? Finally? If he fails badly, what possible excuse could there be now? Nobody upstairs to blame. No leaks in the press of a power struggle or having to go to war w/ guys he didn't chose will hold water.

Wait, how does Reid have more power? Because of influence over Roseman? He hasn't assumed any new power since this happened. If anything Smolenski seems to have gained the most from this move.

Pretty much. I think he still has one more card to play, though - grooming the next QB who will replace Vick. That, combined with a happy and productive locker room, may be enough to push him up into a FO role while whomever is waiting in the wings (everyone's favorite Gru-dawg) gets ready.

Well, you don't have the ego-bumping between him and Banner, and Roseman is more likely to listen to Reid and what Reid wants done. All those moves - re-signings, trade for Ryans - seem like classic Reid moves.

So now Reid gets what he wants, and with no one to really question why, if they don't win it all, there will be no buffer to blame ("wanted to sign X, but Banner said he was too much", etc.)

Well that's the thing, if Reid's name isn't on the moves, and he's puppeting Roseman and Smolenski then if something goes wrong they become the targets, not Reid. So I'm not buying the "this is all on Reid" angle, if anything this is just moving different pieces in front of him.

But that's just it - Reid's name IS on the moves.

They can't blame Roseman for bringing in the players Reid wants.
They can't blame Smolneski because he handles the day-to-day stuff and won't be as involved with player stuff as Reid and Roseman.

On top of that, Reid asked for more power (if you believe the LA Times report) and this is a result of it and keeping him away from SD. If they fail to win the title (and I think this might be a way to extend his contract another 2-3 years, as a way of giving him time after this "seismic shift" to finally get it done), then there can't be any more excuses because Reid has exhausted them all.

Publicly or internally with Lurie? It feels to me like Roseman is now lined up perfectly to be the scapegoat for Reid on personnel issues, and there's still pressure on JC who can get removed and blamed if the new pieces on defense don't produce results.

Exactly, Lyte. Andrew Walter Reid is sitting pretty today, knowing that scapegoats o' plenty are just waiting to be blamed for his inevitable failures. They can fire Castillo after this season, and then they can can Roseman in a couple of years. All of this will coincide with Reid completing his 19th year as head coach of this this titleless team. And Lurie will finally realize that the public won't stand for a 20th championshipless season with Reid at the helm.

Unfortunately, by that time, Gruden will be in prison for having sex with a minor, and Cowher will be well into a second career as a guest pianist on the lucrative NFL Films' Presents "Sounds of the Gridiron" tour of local orchestral halls.

True, never liked Banner. Doubt this is the cure all though. it's a step.

I do a flyover here when something newsworthy happens.

I know bottom line info will appear here and there's not 50 pages of sophomoric name calling to wade through.

I found myself looking for a LIKE or THANKS button for informative posts. (derp). Since there isn't one and I forgot my blasted password, I hadda re-register

Maybe I'll remember my frickin password this time. I'm running out of new user names.

So thanks!
