Hypothetical FF draft

Sorry, Seth - just had to bring this section into year 2003.

If you have the first pick in the 2003-04 FF draft, who do you take?

Priest Holmes would be a lock for me, if he didn't get injured. Now, I'd be shy on pulling that trigger.

I'd go with Ricky Williams.

Just to get a discussion going- who's to say Marshall doesn't return to form in 2003? Definitely warrants a look in a year where there's no clear cut #1.

Other options? How 'bout Tomlinson, Portis, and for people with brass balls, Marvin Harrison.

I like Portis, and think he's a 1st round pick. Just don't know if I could take him at #1 overall.

Thought about Faulk but how long can he keep putting up those crazy numbers?

Thought about Harrison too. But I've been burned by Randy Moss and Terrell Owens in the first round before. I don't think I can take a WR at #1 overall.

I agree there is no clear cut #1 pick this year.

One thing fantasy players will have going for them this year is that there are literally 8 or 9 QBs out there who could potentially have the best statistical years.

McNabb
Collins
Favre
Garcia
Culpepper
Bledsoe
Pennington
Vick
Gannon
Warner
Pennington
Manning
McNair

For the most part, all of their statistics could be interchangeable. There's no clear cut best QB there, so no sense wasting a top pick on a QB.

Here's another guy who just popped into my head as a potential #1- Deuce McAllister. Over 1700 total yards and 16 TDs in his first year as a starter. Should only get better from here.

Thought of him too, Seth.

GG - you listed Pennington twice.

But a QB that can throw and pass, McNabb or Garcia, usually has more value than a straight pocket passer, unless that pocket passer explodes for 40 passing TDs like Warner a few years ago.

So, I'd rate those type QBs ahead of, say, a Pennington.

I drafted Deuce McCallister in the 3rd round last year and he had a good start to the year. Then he got beat up a little and slowed down.

Personally, I wouldn't take him #1 overall. But that's just me.

The way the Saints players have quit the past two seasons, it can hurt you in your playoffs if you count on those guys (Horn, McCallister, Brooks).

But a running QB like that is also prone to get banged up a miss a game or two here and there. Look at what happened to Donovan this year (though that wasn't a running play), and look at how McNair is constantly banged up.

Not saying I would take Pennington over McNabb, just trying to illustrate my point that it's hard to pick a clear-cut #1 at QB.

I see your point on Deuce. I'm just kind of throwing out different ideas right now.

If I HAD to choose right now, I'd take Priest #1. Sure, the injury is a concern, but I'd say he's the safest pick. I just don't want to be the guy sitting there at the end of the year having someone say "How could you have taken THAT guy #1?"

Chiefs- are they clearly on the rise? Not like SD is (imo). Holmes- older and now has 1 VERY SIGNIFFIGANT injury on his rap sheet.

Touches are almost equal between the 2, but again, I see SD steadily on the rise and the team is infused with young talent. KC - clearly this is not the case.

Another thing to note when chosing RBs is the Defense on each team. This translates into a few goalline carries more per player if youre followin me and the Charger d is vastly superrior to that of the KC Chiefs.

Again on the topic of goaline- LT has no Tony Richardson muddling the picture in SD they way Priest had TDs vultured from him this season.

In a 2 keeper league I am in , I own both Priest and LT and its a no brainer that LT is the keeper.

Didn't follow your point about the goal line carries and how they relate to the team's defense.

Priest and LT? you've got a pretty good pair of options there for a keeper league. Ours is two keepers- I'm thinking Portis and either Driver or Hines Ward.

you go Ward, FYI.

As for the defense-

A better D gets turnovers. Turnovers mean short fields, increased odds of goalline carries....

It's Freddie Mitchell for me! Seriously, it would be tough but I would either go with Priest or Portis. Remember, Portis had over 1500 yards and that was basically over the span of just 12 games!

I took Portis last year in 5th round. He was a steal, once he became the starter.

He had some monster games.

And Denver is known for the RB position lately (Davis, Anderson, Gary and now Portis).

You can't go wrong with LT, though.
