Before I trade Fred Taylor...

Hey all, a guy in my league is away for the weekend, so I have a few days to think this over. He's got Manning and McNair as QBs, Harrison at WR, and jack shit for RBs and other WRs. He's starting Bobby Shaw this weekend, if that helps.

Anyway, he's made the league aware that he wants to trade one of his QBs for more WR/RB talent.

This is a basic Yahoo league: QB, WR, WR, RB, TE, WR/RB.

Here are my guys at this point (deep bench):

QB - Hasselbeck & Carter (for later this year when he has easier matchups)

WR - Horn (lock), Ward (lock), Driver, Boston, and Steve Smith

RB - Henry (lock) and Taylor, then the tiny-power bunch of Hambrick, Westbrook, and D.Davis

Glancing at the stats, Taylor is having a good year. But looking at points, he's been a borderline middleweight so far. I know that Hasselbeck has done fine lately, but McNair is an every-week starter. I figure I can start Henry most weeks, and go with my trio of youngsters for the other slot based on matchups.

At this point, it makes perfect sense to jettison Taylor for McNair, right? I just want to be sure it isn't 2:30am crazyness talking.

Honestly, I'm not sure I'd do it.

You're replacing a sure full time player with a slew of guys that split time (though Hambrick seems to have solidified himself as the #1 this year).

How many points seperate McNair and Hasselbeck from week to week? I doubt enough to make it worth the risk of dropping to a solid RB and a question at RB.

I wouldn't do it.

I have an interesting perspective in this, considering that I've had both McNair and Hasselbeck until today. I just traded McNair and Chris Chambers for McNabb and Randy Moss. My line of thinking is that the dropoff between McNair to Hasselbeck is not nearly as great as the dropoff between Moss and Chambers. McNabb is just a safety valve, and maybe he'll eventually come aroudn this year.

In your case, I know it sounds strange, but I'd go for the trade. McNair has had some enormous days so far, and I think he'll have some more, based on their schedule. When he tore up Carolina's D, that pretty much solidified his right as the best QB in the business. He's been consistantly hitting in the 20s in my league, while Hasselbeck only occasionally reaches the 20s.

As far as your running back situation, do you get points for special teams yardage/TDs? If so, you have Westbrook, so in my book, that makes this trade a lock. Even without the special teams, Westbrook's role seems to rightly increase each week, and you have other guys who can rotate in on a good-matchup basis.

Besides, Fred Taylor is always erratic, and he always gets hurt. That alone is reason to trade him.

Just for discussion's sake:

Hasselbeck
w3 - 18
w4 - bye
w5 - 4 (got 18 from Frerotte)
w6 - 10
w7 - 10

McNair
w3 - 17
w4 - 21
w5 - 21
w6 - 26
w7 - 16

-----------
Henry
w1 - 17
w2 - 19
w3 - 0 (hurt)
w4 - 0
w5 - 16
w6 - 3
w7 - 20

Taylor
w1 - 5
w2 - 3
w3 - 6
w4 - 10
w5 - 19
w6 - 4
w7 - bye

I noticed a rumor on the ESPN Top 30 rankings that Taylor might be losing goal-line carries soon. That's the only note I could find on that idea. That's another part of the reason I was considering it.

Does that change your opinion at all?

I don't get Special Teams yardage, but I do get Special Teams TDs.

Absolutely. With any trade, the points system is a major factor. I didn't realize Taylor was generating so few points. You'd likely get the same production from the other group.
You're making the right call. Pull the trigger.

Update:

He sent a counteroffer, also asking for Steve Smith in the deal. So as it stands:

I give: Fred Taylor, Steve Smith
I get: Steve McNair

Losing Smith complicates things a bit. On one hand, my two WRs are locks. I will need a sub in week10, but Smith plays Tampa that week so I'd be hesitant to play him there anyway. It would leave me with a shaky Driver and Boston at backup, with an empty slot for the current waiver wire pickup of the week.

I figure that Smith isn't guaranteed to stay this hot (19 catches in two weeks is half of his 36 this season), and he faces nearly a month of tough D starting week 10. He does punt returns as a bonus, but I don't get anything for that unless it's a TD, so that's a wash.

Pull the trigger?

Heh. Seeing as I picked Smith up off Waivers for Week 7, that's not too bad a loss, eh?

You wouldn't need to give up Hasselbeck? I wonder what you could get WR-wise for him, from another team. You could effectively upgrade at QB and WR.

Looks like a good trade for you.

Hmm...

I decided to check out the Titans quick and it looks like Drew Bennett may be out for a month (tied as #2 receiver).

I'm pondering asking for his TE (McMichael) to replace my TE (Fauria), but it's not worth it if it makes him too edgy about the trade. He doesn't have anyone else that I want (the guy is still carrying Shaw, Parker, Gordon, Harris, and Zereoue).

I think I'll wait until after MNF to see how his TE and Boston do.

On second thought, maybe I'll request Charlie Garner. He has sucked this year, but their new QB may turn it all around for the Raiders.

I know AE is probably the only one interested, but to close the thread...

He didn't want to part with Garner. I didn't want to show my hand by typing out too detailed of an email, but I reminded him that Garner doesn't get goalline carries and is mostly lousy this season overall. Since the guy's a very good friend of mine, I offered that he trade me McNair/Garner for Taylor/Smith with a condition that if Garner gets more than one TD this weekend, I'll send him back for free. He was happy with that.

Here's hoping Garner waits a week to catch fire under a new QB...
